The Pono Tech awards recognize local organizations that successfully
adopted new technologies. The awards are intended to motivate organizations
in Hawaii to use technology to capitalize on the opportunities of the new
economy. They highlight local, primarily non-information technology companies
and individuals that took a risk to implement a technology project to increase
productivity and benefits. St. Francis, one of Cerner's first HNA
Millennium(R) clients, dubbed their clinical information technology project
the Genesis Project because it represented the first major project undertaken
 as a health system.
"Our healthcare system faced the challenge of providing broad access to
patient clinical data necessary to ensure appropriate and cost effective
care," said Alan Ito, chief information officer for the St. Francis Healthcare
System of Hawaii. "We surpassed that challenge thanks to the Genesis Project.
Clinicians now have access to a patient's medical information from anywhere in
the hospital, at their office or even at home."
"We are very pleased that St. Francis Healthcare System has earned this
impressive Hawaiian technology award," said Trace Devanny, president of Cerner
Corporation. "St. Francis is an example of how healthcare organizations can
achieve dramatic improvements in quality of care and system efficiencies by
making information technology work for them."
"The Pono Tech award was also recognition of our efforts to improve our
operational efficiencies," added Ito. "Cerner's clinical information systems
helped those efforts succeed. Through HNA Millennium, we have greatly
improved operational efficiencies, but more importantly, improved the quality
of care that is delivered throughout our health system."
A leader in establishing healthcare services for the people of Hawaii, the
St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii has grown from a 50-bed hospital to
the primary health facility for the people of Hawaii. The two medical centers
are supplemented by health clinics, satellite facilities on four neighboring
islands and hospice and home care services.
St. Francis Healthcare System uses many Cerner products from the HNA
Millennium suite, including PowerChart(R) electronic medical record with Open
 Clinical Foundation(R), CareNet(R) Orders, RadNet(R) radiology information
system, PharmNet(R) pharmacy information system, Open Management
