Christie Whitman to Speak in Philadelphia, Tour Water Works with Mayor

    PHILADELPHIA, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In observance of Earth Week, U. S.
 EPA Administrator Christie Whitman will promote environmental education and
 break ground for a new interpretive center at the Fairmount Water Works at
 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 26.
     Administrator Whitman will join Mayor John Street at the groundbreaking
 ceremony to begin construction of the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive
 Center.
     EPA gave the city a $200,000 grant in 1999 to better inform the public
 about urban watersheds, Philadelphia's water supply, and water treatment
 systems.  The center promotes stewardship of water resources by teaching
 children and adults to make wise decisions about water use.  It is expected to
 serve as many as 100,000 visitors annually.
     After speaking at the groundbreaking program, Administrator Whitman will
 tour the Fairmount Water Works.
