City Holding Selects New Head of Retail Banking

 City Holding Company (Nasdaq:   CHCO), a $2.7 billon bank holding company
 headquartered in Charleston, West Virginia, today announced that William R.
 Butcher will serve as a special assistant to the board of directors of City
 Holding Company and City National Bank.  Upon obtaining a notice of
 non-objection from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC),
 Butcher will immediately assume the position of executive vice president in
 charge of Retail Banking for City National Bank of West Virginia.
     Since July of 1999, Butcher has served as senior vice president, Retail
 Banking - Central Indiana Affiliate, for Fifth Third Bancorp in Indianapolis.
 He was responsible for a sales team of over 500 professionals in 74 banking
 centers covering 10 different geographical markets.  Butcher's retail division
 generated revenues of $128 million with operating expenses of $72 million.
     From January 1998 until July 1999, Butcher served in a similar capacity
 for Peoples Bank & Trust in Indianapolis until that bank was acquired by Fifth
 Third Bancorp.  From 1995 until January 1998, he was a retail banking vice
 president for Bank One, Cincinnati.
     Butcher received his bachelor's degree in economics from Wabash College in
 1987 and his master's degree from Indiana University in 1992.
     Gerald R. Francis, who in February was selected by City Holding Company as
 the new president and chief executive officer for the holding company and City
