Claire's Stores, Inc. Reports March Same Store Sales

    PEMBROKE PINES, Fla., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Claire's Stores, Inc.
 (NYSE:   CLE) reported today sales for the five weeks ended April 7, 2001
 increased 2 percent to $88,486,000 compared with $86,960,000 reported for the
 five weeks ended April 3, 2000.  The company's comparable store sales for the
 five-week period ended April 7, 2001 were even with the prior year.
     Comparable sales by brand for March 2001 were as follows:
 
     -- Claire's North America: positive mid single digits
     -- Claire's Europe: positive low single digits
     -- Afterthoughts: negative high single digits
     -- Mr. Rags: negative high single digits
 
     Rowland Schaefer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Claire's, said
 "We are pleased the Claire's Accessories stores produced positive same store
 sales comparisons in a tough retail environment.  As we have stated in
 previous press releases, the new product that differentiates Claire's and
 Afterthoughts is flowing into the Afterthought stores and should be fully set
 by the end of April.  We are closely monitoring sales trends and reactions
 from our customers as we evolve this business.   Although we are slightly
 behind our sales plan through March, we continue to be comfortable with our
 guidance of 16 cents for the first quarter which will be reported on May
 24th."
