Commercialization of Tagatose Expedited

Apr 25, 2001, 01:00 ET from Spherix (Biospherics Incorporated)

BELTSVILLE, Md., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Spherix (Biospherics
Incorporated) (Nasdaq: BINC), today announced that Arla Foods is stepping up
its commercialization of tagatose, the Firm's low-calorie, full-bulk
sweetener. An Expert Panel recently determined that the product could be sold
in the U.S. (Spherix News Release April 11, 2001). Officials of Arla Foods,
the Danish company bringing Spherix's product to market, visited Spherix
headquarters in Beltsville, Maryland, and stated that clearing the safety
hurdle has let them advance their production and marketing schedules.
Adding new resources to the project, Arla has increased its marketing
efforts, concentrating on those companies that had been awaiting the GRAS
determination. Arla is stepping up its participation in food trade shows,
including the International Food Ingredient & Additives Exhibit in Tokyo in
May, the Annual Meeting of the Institute of Food Technologists in New Orleans
in June, the Second International Symposium on Sweeteners in Hiroshima in
November, and the Food Ingredients Europe meeting in London in November.
The GRAS determination has also accelerated discussions with major
potential partners for manufacture and distribution.
Arla officials reported a heavy increase in the number of tagatose
inquiries being handled by its sales office in Union, New Jersey, and its
Denmark headquarters. New articles on tagatose have been accepted for
publication by leading food science journals.
The next targets for regulatory approval are Europe, Japan and all
countries following the safety evaluation of the Joint Expert Committee on
Food Additives which will consider tagatose in June. It is believed that the
achievement of GRAS status in the U.S. will aid those efforts.
Dr. Gilbert V. Levin, CEO of Spherix, stated, "I am very pleased to see
Arla enhancing its pace of commercialization of tagatose. Everything we are
learning reinforces our prospect for major royalties coming to Spherix from
sales of a new, world-class sweetener."
Dr. Levin also stated that based on the favorable information provided by
Arla, he has cancelled a previously planned sale of some of his shares of
 Spherix stock.
