Compaq CTO Shane Robison to Deliver Opening Keynote at LinuxWorld

Aug 27, 2001, 01:00 ET from Compaq Computer Corporation

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- LinuxWorld -- Compaq Computer
Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced that Senior Vice President and Chief
Technology Officer Shane Robison will deliver the opening keynote speech at
the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in San Francisco on Tuesday, Aug. 28. In
addition, Compaq today announced the availability of its Linux and Tru64 UNIX
 Portability Kit.
"The open source community has made tremendous inroads over the past
10 years in establishing Linux as a viable platform for a variety of
applications," said Gary Campbell, vice president of enterprise server
strategy for the Office of the CTO. "Compaq continues its commitment to
addressing the needs of customers who are deploying Linux, through initiatives
such as enhancing the kernel, providing services and solutions optimized on
our platforms, building high performance technical computing clusters, or
 enabling interoperability for customers."

Keynote addresses Linux opportunities and challenges in the enterprise
In his keynote address to the LinuxWorld audience, Compaq's Robison will
discuss the growing role Linux is playing in the enterprise -- and the
challenges associated with transforming Linux into a true enterprise-hardened
operating system for running mission-critical applications. Robison will
provide insight into the application areas where Linux is being deployed, as
well as the obstacles both Linux-committed system vendors and the Linux
community face in helping Linux reach its potential. The opening keynote will
take place on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time in Salon 9
 at the San Francisco Marriott.

Linux and Tru64 UNIX Portability Kit
Compaq also announced the availability of the Compaq Linux and Tru64 UNIX
Portability Kit. The Kit is now available free of charge to developers and
enterprise customers who are looking to combine the best in open source Linux
solutions on industry-standard server platforms including market leading
Compaq ProLiant(TM) servers, with the highly robust, scalable, and easy-to-
manage Tru64 UNIX-based AlphaServer platforms. The kit greatly simplifies
application deployment and portability across Linux and UNIX systems. The
Linux and Tru64 UNIX Portability Kit provides the common Linux desktop
environments GNOME and KDE, a binary emulator that allows users to take
applications built with shared objects on Alpha Linux and run them directly on
a Tru64 UNIX platform, and the Solaris Compatibility Library which eases
application portability from Sun Solaris to Linux and Tru64 UNIX.

     Compaq Linux Solutions
Compaq provides Linux solutions from the edge of the network to the heart
of the IT infrastructure. From Compaq iPAQ handheld devices to market-leading
industry-standard ProLiant servers and high-performance AlphaServer systems,
Compaq offers the platforms more customers choose for their Linux-based
solutions. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), Compaq ProLiant
servers are the industry-leading server platform for Linux, with 22 percent
market share for the first quarter of 2001.
