ComponentSource Furthers Market-Building Efforts for 'off-the-shelf' Enterprise JavaBeans at COMDEX

Call to Action to Spur the Availability of 'off-the-shelf' EJB Components

Continues at Sun Microsystems' JavaUniversity Training Program

    CHICAGO, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- COMDEX -- ComponentSource, the world's
largest marketplace and community for "off-the-shelf" software components,
today demonstrated the furthering of its market-building efforts to grow the
supply of "off-the-shelf" Enterprise JavaBeans(TM) (EJBs). The company's
flagship course: "Enterprise JavaBeans(TM) Specification: Development of
Reusable Components", a long-term entry on Sun Microsystem's
JavaUniversity(SM), ran again today to Java developers eager to understand how
they may profit from building reusable EJB components for internal reuse and
subsequent availability on the open market.
This is the fourth time that the course has anchored JavaUniversity since
its premiere at JavaOne 2000. ComponentSource has evangelized to over 1,400
potential EJB component authors at JavaUniversity since June last year. The
day-long tutorial runs in parallel this year with a ComponentSource sponsored
event called "Components and Cocktails", a sign-up evening reception for new
component authors interested in tapping into the open market. The open market
for reusable components is estimated to be worth $1 billion by 2002, according
 to PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Sun Microsystems estimates that 77 percent of developers using Java
technology want access to "off-the-shelf" EJBs. Demand for reusable EJB
components is outstripping supply with thousands of EJB components needed
before the market reaches critical mass.
Currently there remain just over 1,000 Java-based components on the open
market; over 100 of these are Enterprise JavaBeans. Further momentum however,
depends on the release of the final EJB 2.0 specification expected later this
 year.
"The interest in our JavaUniversity course has been encouraging. Also
over the past six months our white paper 'Creating Commercial Components
(EJB)' has been downloaded by over 16,000 corporate developers from our
community web site," commented Sam Patterson, CEO of ComponentSource. "Even
if these developers do not enter the open market with their expertise today
they will at least learn how to create reusable EJBs for internal use. We of
course hope they will go a step further at some stage and publish their
components on the open market. Many of our signed component authors are now
waiting for the release of the EJB 2.0 spec before releasing their EJBs onto
 the open market."
