CHESAPEAKE, Va., Sept. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Charities, the philanthropic and community giving initiative of Cox Communications, announced that it raised more than $200,000 last week for community grants to local non-profits in Virginia.
These dollars were raised through two key fundraisers held September 15 and September 16 in the Hampton Roads area. They include the 2nd Annual Cox Charities Benefit concert, featuring Earth Wind, and Fire (held at the Chrysler Hall in Norfolk), and Cox's first "Score One for Charity" golf tournament held at the Virginia Beach National Golf Course.
Gary McCollum, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cox Virginia, said "Cox Communications is proud of the success of Cox Charities and the important community and youth engagement programs we support through this grant making program. All of the dollars raised will be used to fund grants for non-profit organizations which are focused on meeting the growing youth and education needs of students here in Virginia."
Cox Charities advances the academic achievement of youth by awarding grants for youth and education programs in Virginia communities served by Cox. Grants are intended for youth education programs involving science and technology, mentoring, literacy, and other areas promoting the education of youth. Since launching the program two years ago, nearly $200,000 in Cox Charities grants have been awarded to qualified non-profits in Virginia. The 2011 Cox Charities grants cycle runs from Oct. 10 to Nov. 11, 2011. Specific program requirements and application details can be found at www.coxcharities.org.
