PANORAMA CITY, Calif., May 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and Telscape Communications held a kickoff event to announce the statewide expansion of the California LifeLine Wireless Program for eligible households. While celebrating California LifeLine's 30th year, the CPUC makes affordable access to 21st century communications technology and services real and tangible for thousands of low income Californians.

Telscape will provide federal Lifeline wireless service to approved California residents; the base service is free for 1,000 voice minutes and 200 texts. A free cell phone is also available to all that qualify for the program.

"When we revised the [LifeLine] rules in January we knew we were going to be creating something that would better meet California's communication needs than did the previous state or federal programs," said CPUC Commissioner Catherine Sandoval, "and it's turned out to be very popular as demonstrated by this expansion, and the demand that we're seeing now."

So far, the efforts to add subscribers to the service has been very successful, with over 6,000 new subscribers added in its limited release through local Telscape street teams. Telscape will now expand efforts and deploy street teams throughout the state to make the program more easily accessible, and provide visibility to this new service.

To qualify, persons must either: (1) meet household income requirements or (2) someone in the household participates in an approved government assistance program.
