Credence Taps Fast-Growing Flash Memory Market

STMicroelectronics Takes Delivery of 100th Kalos Test System

Apr 24, 2001, 01:00 ET from Credence Systems Corporation

    FREMONT, Calif., April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --
Credence Systems Corporation (Nasdaq: CMOS), a leading manufacturer of
automatic test equipment (ATE) for the worldwide semiconductor industry, today
announced its milestone 100th shipment of the Kalos(TM) test system to
STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), one of the world's premier semiconductor
companies. Credence's Kalos is the only flash memory test platform in the
market today with the flexibility to handle engineering solutions, wafer
probe, and final test without compromising cost or performance.
STMicroelectronics will use the Kalos systems to test flash memory chips for
mobile phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, and handheld computers.
STMicroelectronics has already installed several of Credence's Kalos testers
and Personal Kalos(TM) systems at its Memory Product Division.
"The Kalos test systems have provided STMicroelectronics with innovative
features, such as multi-site test capabilities and a zero footprint design.
These features have been instrumental in helping us to maintain a leadership
position in the flash memory market," said Mario Licciardello, Vice President
of the Memory Group and General Manager of STMicroelectronics' Flash Division.
"Kalos' multi-site test capabilities and effortless integration of existing
probers have helped us maximize throughput and significantly decrease
time-to-market, giving us a competitive edge in the marketplace.
Additionally, the Kalos' zero-footprint design enabled us to increase our test
capacity by 70 percent and eliminate test floor time sharing," continued
 Licciardello.
"In a soft IC market, flash memory remains one of the few bright spots and
is forecasted to outperform the IC industry as a whole. This year, many
industry analysts expect to see flash memory sales grow despite the downturn,"
said Paul Sakamoto, Vice President and General Manager of Credence's Memory
Products Division. "Our systems meet the high-production needs of flash
memory makers such as STMicroelectronics, and our long-term, ongoing
relationship with them is evidence of this," continued Sakamoto. "We are
proud of this milestone because it demonstrates a new standard for
high-production flash test, where high-performance and minimal footprint is
 essential."

     About Kalos
The Kalos test system provides comprehensive testing of flash memory
devices. Capable of parallel testing of up to 32 NOR flash or 128 Serial NVM
devices, Kalos includes the industry's first Tester-On-A-Card(TM)
architecture, a revolutionary feature that enables independent testing on each
card. The 50 MHz tester utilizes the same amount of floor space as traditional
10 MHz systems and enables maximum performance with the smallest footprint of
any flash memory tester on the market. Kalos creates a new standard for flash
memory test by providing manufacturers with an integrated, parallel solution
that reduces the cost of test and quickens time to market. In addition, the
Personal Kalos, a benchtop engineering version, allows engineers to develop
and revise test programs, diagnose yield issues, and carry out design
validation studies at their desks -- further decreasing time to test, and
 ultimately, time to market.
