'CRN' Survey Reveals Big Gender Gap in Salaries for Technology Personnel

    JERICHO, N.Y., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Big differences in compensation
 persist between most men and women working for technology solution providers,
 according to data from "CRN's" annual salary survey.
     The survey of 1,115 individuals -- managers, salespeople, and technical
 personnel -- was conducted in February - March 2001, obtaining data on total
 compensation (the sum of salary, bonus, and commission) for the years 2000 and
 1999.
     Among all survey respondents, the data reveal a 28-percent gap in
 compensation last year between males and females. The median level of
 compensation was $67,500 for men, compared to $52,500 for women.
     The gap turns into a chasm among salespeople. Within this group of survey
 respondents, median compensation last year was $73,500 for men and $45,000 for
 women, a difference of over 60 percent.
     "Our data show that experience is a key factor when it comes to
 compensation for salespeople," says John Roberts, "CRN's" director of
 editorial research. "But the average difference in experience between salesmen
 and saleswomen is only two years, which by itself does not seem to be enough
 to explain away the sizeable gap in compensation."
     On a more positive note, the survey data also reveal that the gender gap
 is narrowing. Among all respondents, the difference in compensation closed
 from 37 percent in 1999 to 28 percent last year.
     Looking at technical personnel, the gap has closed almost entirely. Among
 all 674 technical staff surveyed, for example, the median level of
 compensation for women was $67,500, slightly higher than the $65,000 figure
 for men. The same holds true for technical managers.
     And while differences in compensation remain for some specific technical
 job classifications -- for example, those certified as Oracle Database
 Administrators -- the gap is narrowing here as well.
     "These days, with the market for qualified, competent technicians so
 tight, just finding the right person is hard enough," says "CRN's" Roberts.
 "Whether they are male or female is increasingly irrelevant to employers."
