Customer Selects Acucorp for IBM S/390 Mainframe Server Migration Project

Apr 16, 2002, 01:00 ET from Acucorp, Inc.

SAN DIEGO, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Acucorp, an international
provider of application development solutions designed to solve
mission-critical business issues, announced that it was selected by the Taiwan
Securities Central Depository Co., Ltd. to assist in the migration of a stock
inventory system. The system was moved from IBM's RS6000 to Linux running on
the S/390 mainframe server, making Acucorp the first open systems COBOL vendor
to announce its selection as the COBOL of choice in a server consolidation
strategy under Linux on this platform. Acucorp's extend(TM)5 family of
solutions, currently available on more than 600 other platforms including
Linux for the IBM eServer iSeries platform, provide technologies for Internet
deployment, COBOL-based GUI development, COBOL access to RDBMS data (DB2,
 Informix and Oracle among others) as well as access to ODBC data sources;
distributed computing with Thin Client architecture; and programmer
 productivity.
"extend5 has always offered our customers and ISVs a high degree of
portability and interoperability," says Joe Seiley, Acucorp's Director of
Business Development. "And, now with its support of the Linux for IBM eServer
zSeries, xSeries and iSeries product lines, Acucorp customers, like TSCD, can
enjoy the security and stability provided by these enterprise servers together
 with our state-of-the-art COBOL solution."
Taiwan Securities Central Depository Co., Ltd. (TSCD), a 400-employee
service center charged with managing Taiwan's nationwide stock depository, was
the first company to run Acucorp's ACUCOBOL(TM)-GT development software on
Linux on S/390. Their inventory application was moved to the more stable
enterprise server using Acucorp's ACUCOBOL(TM)-GT compiler and runtime. This
allowed them to simplify existing hardware maintenance issues and
substantially lower maintenance costs by consolidating the application onto
one server. In addition to ACUCOBOL-GT, TSCD also incorporated Acucorp's
AcuServer(TM) file server technology and the AcuConnect(R) distributed
computing technology into their stock inventory system.
"We desperately needed a way to handle the increasing number of business
transactions our application was receiving and Linux on S/390 provided the
perfect solution," said David Chuang, TSCD's IT Manager. "So, when it came
time to migrate our application, we didn't even consider switching from the
ACUCOBOL programming language because of the risks, costs and time involved.
With Acucorp's extend5 with ACUCOBOL(TM)-GT, we were able to complete the
migration in half the time it would have taken had we chosen another language
 alternative."
"The combination of the powerful Linux operating system, the stable S/390
mainframe server and Acucorp's interoperable ACUCOBOL-GT development
environment made it possible to support TSCD's growing business needs,"
explains Joset King, Manager of Global Midmarket Business, IBM Taiwan.
