D-Link Expands Ethernet Line With New Gigabit Over Copper Switch

Apr 17, 2001, 01:00 ET from D-Link

IRVINE, Calif., April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- D-Link, the leading true
manufacturer of Award-Winning Ethernet Switches worldwide, today unveiled an
 affordable scalable multi-speed 8-Port 10/100Mb high-performance Gigabit Over
Copper Ethernet Switch with a 1000Base-T Copper Uplink called the D-Link
DES-1009G. This powerful Gigabit switch is the perfect cost effective
solution for increasing uplink speeds to Gigabit Ethernet Server or Backbone
connections where bandwidth demands are high.
     (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010327/DLINKLOGO )
The D-Link DES-1009G is an Unshielded Twisted Pair, Copper-based Gigabit
Switch with eight 10/100 Mb Auto-Negotiation Ethernet ports and one 1000 Mb
Gigabit Ethernet port. The D-Link DES-1009G's Ethernet ports detect whether a
straight through or crossover cable has been connected to it. When connected
to a network the D-Link DES-1009G automatically detects and uses the highest
transfer speed of the network segment it is connected to. Designed to support
the latest networking technologies, such as VLAN (passing VLAN Tagged
packets), IEEE 802.3x compliant flow control, the D-Link DES-1009G seamlessly
 works with an existing network.
"This new Scalable Ethernet switch with Gigabit uplink extends the range
of SMB Ethernet high-performance, affordable solutions that D-Link has been
delivering to the Small to Medium Business segment since 1986," said Steven
Joe President of D-Link. "The Gigabit port of the DES-1009G works with
standard copper cabling to provide increased performance for high-bandwidth
activities such as video streaming, network servers, and graphic
 workstations."
The D-Link DES-1009G strictly complies with the IEEE 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3u,
IEEE 802.3 specifications and it is completely interoperable in a multi-vendor
environment. The D-Link gigabit over copper switch utilizes a non-blocking
rate-adaptive store and forward switching scheme that minimizes execution
problems delivering excellent performance. Data intensive workstation will
get significant performance enhancement while future proofing the network
high-speed access through the Ethernet scalability. Throughput is
considerably enhanced when the switch operates in full duplex, which delivers
20/200/1000Mb data rates and flow control.
The fact that the D-Link DES-1009G uses the standard CAT 5 cabling means
that it has complete compatibility with existing Ethernet/Fast Ethernet
networks, and allows a network to be upgraded to Gigabit speeds without the
need for pulling more cable. The D-Link DES-1009G is the simplest solution
for networks that require high bandwidth usage for server farms, data storage
 devices or video conferencing systems.
The D-Link DES-1009G provides dynamic filtering and forwarding decisions
by auto-learning device addresses on each port and provides support for 4096
active addresses using hashing for quick switching decisions to keep data
flowing. The gigabit switch also employs several layers of memory management
to keep addresses and packet buffers free and current. Memory management
includes address ageing (timeout) capabilities and collision backpressure flow
control for Half-Duplex and non-IEEE802.3x Full-Duplex Devices. In addition,
D-Link DES-1009G supports buffering allocation of 512 bytes per port and
 broadcast storm protection.
The D-Link DES-1009G provides 3 LEDs per port to report connection speed,
port status, and network activity. And finally, a first for this class of
switch set, D-Link added new "Management-at-a-Glance" LEDs, to report real-
time HTTP (web traffic), ICQ (Chat traffic), and SMTP (email) traffic.

     Price and Availability
The D-Link DES-1009G Gigabit Ethernet Over Copper Switch is available now
through authorized retail, reseller, and distribution partners at an Estimated
 Street Price (ESP) of $280.
In another release today, D-Link launched its DGE-500T Gigabit Over Copper
Adapter, which is priced at $129 (ESP).
