Deputy Sheriffs And Target Team Up to Host Back to School Shopping Spree Event for Underprivileged 6th Graders in Visitacion Valley
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On August 19 at the Target store in Colma, California, the Bay Area Deputy Sheriffs' Charitable Foundation will host 270 6th grade students for the Sheriffs and You Back to School Shopping Spree. The Foundation will provide transportation to and from the event, which takes place from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Since 2005, the annual Sheriffs and You Shopping events have touched the lives of over 3,000 underprivileged students in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Students from Visitacion Valley Middle School will participate in this year's shopping spree. As part of San Francisco's Supervisorial District 10, Visitacion Valley is comprised mostly of students from low-income families. Each 6th grader will get $100 to spend on school supplies and clothes, while the Foundation provides free backpacks. Each student will also be paired with a Sheriff's Deputy throughout the event.
The Foundation understands that teachers dedicate their lives to the betterment of young people, but their hard work and sacrifice too often go unnoticed. Being part of a district with a high volume of low-income families and often not recognize by the district for their needs means Visitacion Valley grapples with tough budget decisions, and teachers frequently have to spend their own money to adequately stock their classrooms. With that in mind, every 6th grade teacher from Visitacion Valley will receive $200 to spend on classroom supplies.
The mission of the Bay Area Deputy Sheriffs' Charitable Foundation is to help underprivileged children see that people in the community care about their wellbeing. The Foundation often forges relationships with the children it serves that last throughout their school years and into early adulthood. Many young people have remarked that the Foundation was a powerful influence on their development, encouraging them to pursue loftier goals than they otherwise might have.
The Bay Area Deputy Sheriffs' Charitable Foundation's work is made possible by the participation of the business community as well as the enthusiasm of countless volunteers. Generous donations from local retailers enable the Foundation to hold Christmas and back-to-school shopping sprees each year. These charitable programs create stronger bonds within communities and are a worthy investment in the future.
