Don't Let These 10 Usual Sus-PESTS Bug You This Summer

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 21, 2015 /CNW/ - Whether Canadians are enjoying the summer in the city or in the country, there is a strong chance they will encounter one or more pesky pests, according to Orkin Canada, the country's leading pest control company with more than a century of experience.

The following is a list of 10 pests Canadians may encounter this summer be it downtown, in the suburbs or at the cottage (in alphabetical order):

1. Ants

2. Bed bugs

3. Cockroaches

4. Earwigs

5. Raccoons

6. Rats/mice

7. Spiders

8. Squirrels

9. Termites

10. Wasps/bees/hornets

This list is based on the residential service calls, inquiries and searches on orkincanada.ca in the summer of 2014. Orkin Canada anticipates that the usual sus-pests will bug Canadians during 2015's hot season.

"As the seasons change, pests are continually trying to get inside a home. They are constantly looking for food, protection from the elements and places to breed," said Dr. Alice Sinia, resident entomologist at Orkin Canada. "Understanding where pests hide and breed is the first step to keeping them in their place."

Sinia advises homeowners and residents to make their homes as unwelcoming to pests as possible. Here are three easy ways to be an inhospitable host:

  1. Clean up crumbs or spills immediately, and throw away any odourous food that may attract pests in a tightly sealed outdoor trash bin.
  2. Inspect for leaks and clean up areas with standing water both inside and outside as moisture and small amounts of water are strong pest attractants.
  3. Remove any openings or places of shelter. Check for and seal any cracks or crevices in a home that may be an opening for pests to set up camp. De-cluttering will also reduce the amount of potential shelter.
