Downtown Detroit Improvement Program Update on Construction Conditions for April 27-May 4

Apr 27, 2001, 01:00 ET from City of Detroit

DETROIT, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Listed below are the construction
projects and events that may affect traffic in the downtown Detroit area
between April 27 and May 4:

     * Scaffolding has been erected above the sidewalks at the David Whitney
Building, Woodward and Grand Circus Park, and around the building located at
28 W. Adams, to facilitate facade repairs. Pedestrian access is maintained,
but curb lanes may be impacted intermittently while work is in progress into
 the summer months.
     * A fence has been installed around the perimeter of the Kennedy Square
Garage, to facilitate the demolition and reconstruction of the facility.
Because the garage extends underneath surrounding streets, it is necessary to
cordon off several lanes of traffic to maintain safe conditions. The fence
extends into two northbound lanes of Griswold, two eastbound lanes of
Michigan, two southbound lanes of Woodward, and all of Fort Street between
Griswold and Woodward. The fence will remain in place during demolition and
reconstruction of the garage, which is estimated to be complete in 2002.
 Detours are posted.
     * The eastbound curb lane of Cadillac Square at Bates Street is
obstructed due to underground utility work. Work should be completed by the
 end of April.
     * The sidewalk at Michigan between Griswold and Shelby, and at Griswold
between State Street and Michigan Ave. will be closed throughout the month of
April due to demolition of a building at the corner.
     * Construction has begun in front of the Ford Auditorium for the
extension of Bates Street. Construction activity is not expected to obstruct
traffic on Jefferson Avenue. The Ford Underground Garage will remain open
throughout construction, however some parking spaces inside the garage will be
affected. When the project is completed in the fall of 2001, Bates will be a
through street from Atwater to Jefferson Avenue.
     * SMART bus stops between Shelby and Griswold and Fort have been
eliminated due to traffic congestion. SMART passengers can board busses at
Griswold and Congress or at Fort and Washington.
     * Due to construction at the Compuware and Premier Garage sites, the
following streets will be closed: Farmer from Monroe to Grand River and
Gratiot from Woodward to Broadway. In addition, the following lanes will be
affected: the northbound curb lane of Woodward from State Street to Grand
River; the westbound curb lane of Monroe from Broadway to Woodward; and one
lane of Grand River between Woodward and Farmer.
     * Atwater between St. Aubin and Chene will be closed intermittently for
 utility work until further notice.
     * Atwater will be closed between St. Antoine and Rivard, with no through
traffic from the Renaissance Center West to Third. It is expected to reopen
 by Fall 2001.
     * In addition, the Cadillac Square People Mover station is closed because
 of downtown construction projects.

Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) patrons may also look for
special "Rider Alerts" posted at downtown bus stops that have been changed.
For further information on downtown bus route changes, call 313-933-1300 or
888-DDOT-BUS. This information can also be accessed at 313-628-INFO, or on
the Internet at detroitinfojoe.com . For additional information on all
current freeway closures, please call the Michigan Department of
 Transportation's Construction Hotline at 800-641-6368.
Although the Info Joe web site and hotline attempt to report all street
and sidewalk closures associated with downtown area construction, some
emergency closures, usually related to underground utility work, may occur and
not be reported there or in these advisories.
