Downtown YMCA Receives Surprise Gift for Earthquake Relief

Apr 11, 2001, 01:00 ET from Equilon Enterprises

    SEATTLE, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, April 12 at 1:30pm, the
management team of Equilon Enterprises, Equiva Services and Equilon's Puget
Sound Refinery will tour the Downtown Seattle YMCA and present a check for
$30,000 to assist with earthquake relief. The news of this gift was a welcome
surprise to the Board and staff of the Downtown YMCA as the cost of earthquake
 repairs continues to mount.
Fortunately, prior to the earthquake, the Downtown YMCA had just completed
a full renovation and seismic upgrade to the 1930 building located at 909
Fourth Avenue. The building, however, did suffer damage to two chimneys and
some non-structural cracks in several areas of the facility. In an effort to
support the Seattle community following the earthquake, the companies of
Equilon, Equiva and Puget Sound Refinery decided to make a donation to help
the Downtown Seattle YMCA manage unanticipated costs related to repairs.
"We became aware of needs of the YMCA through State Representative Edward
Murray," says Corporate Affairs Manager Cameron Smyth. "We have numerous
facilities in the Seattle area and are well aware of the damage the YMCA
suffered as a result of the February 28th earthquake. The YMCA plays a vital
role in the lives of young people and it is imperative they do not miss a beat
in serving the community. We at Equilon, Equiva and Puget Sound Refinery
realize that being a part of a community requires giving back, and we cannot
think of a more worthy organization than the YMCA."
Larry Hall, Executive Director of the Downtown YMCA, shared, "During the
repairs, the Downtown YMCA has striven to continue with business as usual.
With an alternative school which students attend daily, twenty homeless teens
living in studio apartments on the third floor and hundreds of adults and
families receiving support services throughout the building, the YMCA has been
able to keep these important programs going without interruption. We owe a
great deal of thanks to our volunteers and generous supporters who have made
 this possible."
Equilon Enterprises and Equiva Services are a part of an alliance formed
between Shell Oil Company and Texaco in 1998. Puget Sound Refinery, a 145,000
barrels a day refinery located in Anacortes, is also a part of the alliance.
The Downtown Seattle YMCA is located at 909 Fourth Avenue. For
information, contact Julie Sistrunk at (206) 382-5061
