Parents, Families, Friends, and Allies Honored to Welcome Dr. Biden
WASHINGTON, Nov. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- PFLAG National (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays)—the nation's original family and ally organization—is honored to announce that Dr. Jill Biden, lifelong educator and Second Lady of the United States, will attend the 2011 PFLAG National Convention. She will speak to hundreds of PFLAG members from across the country at the Opening Ceremony, which will be held at the Westin Alexandria on Friday, November 4th. PFLAG is excited to welcome Dr. Biden, whose long history as an educator and experience as a parent places her in a unique position to witness firsthand—and speak out about—the importance of family support in providing a safe school and community, and a strong education, to all children.
"As a teacher and a mom, I know that acceptance and support at home can lead to positive and healthy outcomes in every important area of life, including education, mental health, and physical health," said Dr. Biden. "When parents and educators work together as a team, children succeed and thrive, and I commend PFLAG for the important role they play in the lives of our students."
"In our nearly 40 years working in the LGBT community, we have seen countless children who are unsure of themselves, who feel unsupported simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and expression and who, therefore, don't achieve the levels of success that they are truly capable of," said PFLAG National Executive Director Jody Huckaby. "We look forward to welcoming Dr. Biden and hearing her speak out as an ally about the important role that families and family acceptance play in providing a great education and a supportive community to our youth and how, when partnered with educators, friends, allies and LGBT people themselves, families are an unstoppable force for change."
Dr. Biden has been an educator for the past 30 years and continues to teach English classes at Northern Virginia Community College. Prior to moving to Washington, Dr. Biden taught English full-time at Delaware Technical and Community College for 15 years. Before that, she taught for 13 years in public schools as a reading specialist and English teacher, and worked part-time with the Rockford Psychiatric Hospital Adolescent Program. Dr. Biden has a long history of activism and service in her community and she continues to work to raise awareness on education, military families, and women's health issues.
Said Huckaby, "Like so many of our members across the country, Dr. Biden is a strong ally voice for change; we are so honored to welcome her."
The 2011 PFLAG National Convention is focused on the theme of Bringing The Message Home, demonstrating the unique family and ally voice of PFLAG members which, when combined with the voice of LGBT people, is a powerful voice for changing hearts and minds.
