"Our annual dumpling eating contest has been so well-received by attendees we decided to expand the event into an entire festival dedicated to the dumpling," said Terry Tang, CEO of Chef One Corp. "This year marks our 10th anniversary manufacturing dumplings in NYC and we are thrilled to bring this first-of-its-kind event to our local community. Giving back to the community is one of our corporate missions and we are honored to work with one of the most important hunger-relief organizations to help fight hunger in New York City."
"The Food Bank For New York City is very grateful to the NYC Dumpling Festival Presented by Chef One for their support and for helping to bring much needed visibility to the pervasive issue of hunger in New York City, especially in these troubled times," said Dr. Lucy Cabrera, President and CEO of the Food Bank For New York City. "A recent survey conducted by the Food Bank shows that half of all New York City residents -- 4 million people -- are having difficulty affording food. With double-digit unemployment and skyrocketing food costs, the upcoming holiday season will be an especially challenging time for the 1.5 million New Yorkers who depend on the Food Bank's programs and services. The funds raised by this event will go a long way to assist New Yorkers in need in the months ahead."
In addition to the dumpling eating contest, the event will include cookbook signings with Chefs Wai Hon Chu, co-author of The Dumpling: A Seasonal Guide; and Jaden Hair, author of The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook: 101 Asian Recipes Simple Enough for Tonight's Dinner; an East Village Dumpling Tour and Dumpling Class by Wai Hon Chu; and family fun games. Guests and attendees will also be able to taste and experience dumplings from around the world with offerings such as gnocchi (Italy), tamale (Mexico), palitaw (Philippines), kuih koci (Malaysia), idli (India), bao (China), and pierogi (Poland).
