ECRI Revamps Health Devices International Sourcebase on the Web

Apr 03, 2001, 01:00 ET from ECRI

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- ECRI (www.ecri.org) today
announced the immediate availability of the newly enhanced Health Devices
International Sourcebase, an international Web-based database of medical
product manufacturers and suppliers and their products.
Expanded search options make it easier for users to retrieve the supplier
or product information for which they are searching. Plus, thousands of
definitions of medical device product categories, written by ECRI technical
information specialists, have been added, making this convenient directory
even more valuable to an organization. Users may now find information by
 using:

     -- Supplier or Device keyword search;
-- Company Index browse, an alphabetical listing of all suppliers in
         Sourcebase;
-- Device Index browse, an alphabetical index of all product categories
         listed in Sourcebase; or
-- Devices by Specialty browse, an alphabetical listing of all devices
within their clinical specialties. Users may view all products
associated with 31 different specialty categories, including
         anesthesia, orthopedics, and radiology.

"We've added new, easy-to-use search features to Sourcebase, including a
Quick Search feature, where users can jump directly to a supplier or device
profile by using the ECRI Universal Medical Device Nomenclature System(TM)
[UMDNS(TM)] term or supplier code," says Valerie Mahon, Sourcebase editor.
"This version is user-friendly and provides the end user with more valuable
 information with fewer search attempts."
The enhanced Sourcebase now also includes profiles for each of the product
categories. Profiles include the device's typical price range,
cross-references to related terms, a list of commonly used names for the
device, and the specialty categories under which the device is classified.
Profiles also include a search option to identify all suppliers of that
particular device. The revamped supplier profiles allow users to view
different pieces of a company's profile, including general information
(history, sales area, financial information), executive contacts, related
companies, product listing, and trade names, or users may view the complete
 profile.
Each field within supplier or device profiles in the Health Devices
International Sourcebase is linked to an extensive glossary, where users can
get helpful explanations of the data collected. Sourcebase also includes an
updated search tips area. Eight different search examples and search strings
are listed, along with tips for browsing, and a "frequently asked questions"
page area, which will be updated according to user feedback.
For thousands of purchasing directors, materials managers, and other
healthcare professionals, the Health Devices International Sourcebase will be
the first place to look for medical product supplier information. This
enhanced product gives subscribers access to critical medical equipment data
worldwide. It links users directly to company Web sites and e-mail as well as
the e-mail of key company personnel.
The Health Devices International Sourcebase is subject to the most intense
verification process of any medical equipment database. ECRI personnel
correspond by e-mail, letter, fax, and phone with the suppliers listed to
ensure the accuracy of the data. A final check by ECRI's professional staff
of engineers, procurement specialists, and clinicians ensures that the data
found in the Health Devices Sourcebase is current, accurate, and reliable.
The Health Devices International Sourcebase contains information on more
than 13,000 confirmed manufacturers and distributors of medical equipment
worldwide -- from disposables and implants to lasers and imaging equipment.
This information is updated continually, and changes are posted to the Web
 site on a monthly basis.
