Obesity is most commonly determined by using a "body mass index" (BMI) and an adult with a BMI above 30 is considered obese. According to the US Center for Disease Control (CDC), obesity is a serious and costly issue, with more than one-third of US adults (34.9%) and 17% of youth officially classified as obese. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, all of which are among leading causes of preventable death. It is widely accepted that obesity puts individuals at risk for more than 30 health conditions.  In 2013, the American Medical Association (AMA) officially recognized obesity as a disease to help change the manner and urgency by which the medical community tackles this complex issue. Also in 2013, the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology and The Obesity Society released new guidelines for doctors to consider obesity a disease and more actively treat obesity.  Weight loss -- even just 5% of body mass -- can significantly lower blood pressure and the risk for Type 2 diabetes.

The economic costs with the recent re-estimation of the annual health care costs of obesity-related illness for 2005 was $190.2 billion or nearly 21% of total annual medical spending in the US.

"The economic toll of obesity is staggering, but the true cost is in the lives lost due to preventable diseases triggered by obesity," stated Robert Grajewski, President of Edison Nation Medical.  "Given the enormity of this disease, Edison Nation Medical is committed to finding and commercializing innovations that can provide obese individuals with the tools they need to successfully and permanently lose weight and regain health. We encourage anyone who has an idea for improving the weight loss and weight management experience to submit their idea and contribute to solving this critical issue."

Joining Edison Nation Medical is free.  Ideas submitted to the organization's confidential and secure online portal cost only $25 to submit and are vetted through an in-depth review process led by a team of medical, product development and legal experts. The end goal is to commercialize each qualified product idea and, when Edison Nation Medical is successful, licensing royalties are shared with the submitting inventor(s).

Inventors are encouraged to submit everything from a back-of-the-envelope sketch to patented and prototype ideas to currently commercialized products looking to scale.
