El Paso Board of Directors Elects Senior Officers

    HOUSTON, April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of El Paso
 Corporation (NYSE:   EPG) announced today the election of the following
 individuals to senior officer positions within the company:  Basil Woller --
 senior vice president and general auditor and Judy Vandagriff -- senior vice
 president, Tax.  These promotions reflect the significant increase in
 responsibility for each of these individuals as a result of the merger between
 El Paso and The Coastal Corporation.
     Basil R. Woller joined El Paso in 1979 and has held various tax accounting
 and audit positions within El Paso Natural Gas Company before becoming
 director of Corporate Audit for El Paso Natural Gas.  In 1997, he became vice
 president and general auditor for El Paso Corporation.  He is a certified
 public accountant and a certified internal auditor.  Mr. Woller oversees a
 wide range of corporate audit activities across the company's operations and
 also is responsible for the compliance program for the company.  He is a
 member of the Board of Directors for the International Institute of Internal
 Auditors.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University
 of Notre Dame and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the
 University of Texas at Austin.
     Judy A. Vandagriff became vice president of Tax for El Paso in 1996 after
 the merger with Tenneco Energy.  Ms. Vandagriff joined Tenneco Energy in 1990
 serving as tax director.  Prior to 1990, she was responsible for corporate and
 regulated tax matters at Arthur Andersen & Co. in Houston.  Her current
 responsibilities at El Paso include all federal, state and international tax
 planning, compliance and controversies impacting the company.  Ms. Vandagriff
 is a certified public accountant, serves as chairman of the INGAA Tax
 Committee, and is a member of the Tax Executives Institute.  She graduated
 with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston -- Clear
 Lake.
