EPCOR Implements LODESTAR(R) LPSS(TM) for Load Profiling and Settlement

Rules engine and easy integration help Alberta-based electric utility

transition to the deregulated marketplace

Apr 17, 2001, 01:00 ET from LODESTAR Corporation

PEABODY, Mass., April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- EPCOR Energy Services Inc., the
retail arm of EPCOR Utilities Inc., is using LPSS(TM) from LODESTAR
Corporation to successfully meet its load profiling and retail settlement
needs under deregulation. LODESTAR is the world's leading provider of e-
Business software to enable customer choice in the new energy economy.
Part of the LODESTAR(R) Customer Choice Suite(TM), LPSS is a cost-
effective, flexibly automated and integrated solution that meets the daily and
monthly load estimating and retail settlement requirements resulting from
deregulation. It supports a variety of profiling methods, integrates with
best-in-class load forecasting software and provides a comprehensive load and
 consumption settlement system.
EPCOR officials selected LPSS in the spring of 2000 and it was in place on
January 1, 2001, when deregulation began in Alberta. EPCOR is relying on LPSS
to reconcile customer electricity consumption against power purchases from
distribution companies and the Alberta Power Pool. Before deregulation, EPCOR
did not require load profiling and settlement capabilities because it operated
as a fully integrated power company.
EPCOR officials credit LODESTAR's Rules Language and metadata feature as
primary factors in the selection of LPSS. These two features significantly
reduce the time and cost to implement and support the LODESTAR solution for
 the changing Alberta marketplace.
"The LODESTAR solution has given us the strategic advantage of not having
to reprogram our retail settlement software every time there is a system
change, " said Cairine MacDonald, president of EPCOR Energy Services.
MacDonald also cited the easy interface of LPSS with EPCOR's current call
center software from Siebel Systems Inc. Tight integration between the
systems is critical because of the need to keep customers consistently
informed in a constantly changing marketplace. "The bill is the one regular
communication channel you have with your customer." she said. "To use this
tool most effectively, the bill must be accurate and contain clear
 information."
"We are extremely pleased that EPCOR selected LPSS as its retail
settlement solution," said Chris Hamilos, chairman and CEO of LODESTAR
Corporation. "The transition to the deregulated environment is a very
significant milestone in EPCOR's evolution, and LODESTAR is happy to have
played a role in making that transition a success."
