Ericsson Enterprise WAP Gateway Allows Secure Mobile Access to Corporate Intranet

WAP Gateway Turns Ericsson Enterprise Mobile Workplace Vision Into True

Reality

Apr 16, 2001, 01:00 ET from Ericsson Inc.

MENLO PARK, Calif., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Ericsson Enterprise, a leader
in voice, data and mobility solutions, today unveiled Enterprise WAP
 Gateway/Proxy 2.0.
This new product allows customers and their employees secure mobile access
to valuable company statistics and data anytime and anywhere. People using
mobile hand-held devices no longer need a laptop or personal computer to get
access to important company information. As a result, today's businesses
realize greater worker productivity and increased customer satisfaction.
Based on the proven Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) technology of
Ericsson, already being deployed by more than 70 service providers, this is
the launch of an enterprise edition of a WAP gateway, providing businesses
with enhanced control and higher security for their offered WAP service. The
Ericsson Enterprise WAP Gateway enables enterprises to provide wireless
information services to their customer base as well as to the enterprise own
 mobile workforce.
     "Ericsson's Enterprise WAP Gateway/Proxy 2.0 transforms Ericsson's vision
of a mobile workplace into real products that provide mobile communication
solutions for businesses," said Ericsson Enterprise Senior Vice President
Bo Larsson. "Earlier this year, Ericsson announced its vision of a 'virtual
enterprise.' In an effort to fulfill this promise, we've moved quickly to
deliver a solution that allows both wired and wireless access to the
 corporation's information network."
"The most outstanding reason to buy the Ericsson Enterprise WAP
Gateway/Proxy 2.0 is it ensures end-to-end security from the WAP enabled
devices to inside the corporate firewall," said Cahner's In-Stat Analyst
Ray Jodoin. "This is crucial for large businesses with highly confidential
information such as banks and other financial institutions who must guarantee
customer confidentiality. With this new product, these businesses can maintain
a competitive edge by offering customers instant mobile access to critical
information from anywhere, whether it's home, in a restaurant or an airport."

     Mobile Internet Applications (B2B)
Internet enabled (WAP) mobile phones will become the dominant method of
accessing the Internet within the next couple of years -- the number of mobile
e-commerce users will exceed the number of wire-line users already in year
2003). The WAP Gateway is the key component to provide this online access for
these smart phones and mobile hand-held devices. Placing an enterprise WAP
Gateway on the corporate Local Area Network (LAN) and behind the company's
firewall can offer a higher level of security than using the WAP services of a
carrier or service provider. User authentication can be done by the access
server, by the gateway and by the application server depending on the
 company's requirements.
Typical examples of such "on-the-go" services offered by enterprises to
 their customers are:

-- An assortment of information services (Infotainment)
-- Financial services (e.g. mobile banking)
     -- Travel and transport services

Mobile Intranet Applications (B2E - Business to Employee)
Dataquest forecasts that by 2003, 55 million employees in North America
will be mobile, representing 37.3% of the total workforce. Ericsson Enterprise
is preparing businesses for this increased mobility with its portfolio of
products such as the WAP Gateway Proxy 2.0. Offering wireless information
services to their own mobile workforce, businesses can achieve greater work
productivity and increased customer satisfaction. These services support
business processes such as sales support, customer service or customer
relationship management. Such wireless services will empower employees to
access company's information and statistics (price information,
delivery/project status and customer information) and to perform transactions
(ordering, booking and confirmation) at anytime and from anywhere.
In order to address the specific needs of Enterprises, the key features
offered by the Ericsson Enterprise WAP Gateway/Proxy 2.0 are:

-- Small server footprint -- running on a Pentium III(R) platform under
        Windows 2000(R)
-- First enterprise WAP gateway complying with the WAP June 2000 standard
-- Integration into SNMP enterprise network management
     -- Over-the-Air (OTA) client configuration
     -- User Agent Profiling (UAProf)
-- Push services via Short Message Peer-to-Peer (SMPP) protocol
-- Optional Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) class 1 and 2
-- Authentication via MSIDSN (mobile subscriber identification) or
-- HTTP based with support of LDAP directories

     Pricing and Availability
The Ericsson Enterprise WAP Gateway/Proxy 2.0 is available for purchase
today. Configurations (defined by scaleable license scheme) start at a price
 of $4,585 USD.
The Ericsson Enterprise WAP Gateway together with Enterprise
communications solutions (including WAP enabled phones and WAP applications)
 is offered via system integrators.
The Enterprise WAP gateway is also available to application developers.
