eVault, Inc., the Leader in Electronic Vaulting Technology Rolls Out Superior Features and Functionality

New Platforms and Capabilities Significantly Enhanced

Dec 04, 2000, 00:00 ET from eVault, Inc.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- eVault, Inc., the leader in
online data backup, recovery and storage, today announced the release of
VytalVault 3.1, the newest version of its Internet-based server backup
solution. This product release not only supports new operating systems but
also features new functionality for eVault users.
VytalVault is an electronic vaulting solution that works over TCP/IP-based
networks to provide a backup and recovery methodology that virtually
eliminates the need for traditional tape backups. The solution consists of
eVault VytalVault Client Software that resides on the individual systems being
backed up, and an eVault VytalVault Storage Server System at the remote site
that receives and manages the backup data on behalf of client systems. The
eVault VytalVault Storage Server system also serves up the protected data to a
client when required for restoring files or entire disks.
A key component of the eVault VytalVault technology is a proprietary Delta
Processing scheme that is capable of identifying and backing up only the
changes that have occurred within the file since the previous backup. This
dramatically reduces the amount of bandwidth necessary to complete a full
backup of a server. With Delta Processing and standard data compression, it
is possible to reduce the time to back up a 10-GB server to a few hours per
night with as little as 128kbps of bandwidth.
"eVault's VytalVault 3.1 puts us in the forefront of backup and recovery
technology," said eVault Chief Executive Officer Norman A. Smith. "We pride
ourselves in offering the marketplace the most reliable, convenient and secure
data storage technology and this new product release is another example of
 that quality and customer focus."
eVault VytalVault 3.1 will support new operating platforms including
 Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 2000, Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Me, Novell(R) NetWare(R)
 5.1, Red Hat(R) Linux(R) 6.2 and Sun(R) Solaris(TM) 7. eVault will continue
to support prior versions including Windows 9x and NT as well as Novell
 Netware 3.2 and 4.11.
eVault's newest features will yield benefits to both system administrators
and end users. These benefits include:

-- Remote Installation Service - Remote Installation allows multiple
servers to be installed or upgraded at one time. The administrator
will no longer have difficulties maintaining inaccessible servers or
        those in remote locations.
-- 56-bit Blowfish Encryption - In addition to 128-bit Blowfish and
TripleDES encryption already available, VytalVault 3.1 now offers
56-bit Blowfish as an option. The system administrator can choose
between various levels depending on speed and security needs.
-- Wizards - New configuration wizards make it easier for VytalVault 3.1
administrators to configure backups and restorations throughout a
corporate network. A complete overhaul of the configuration makes it
easier to use and install with more prompts and simple-to-follow
        guides.
-- Network Resumption - When a network failure occurs during a backup or
restoration, most software makes it necessary to start the entire
process over. VytalVault 3.1 resumes the backup or restoration from
where it left off. It eliminates the need to restart the backup or
restoration from the point of interruption and ensures a continuous
        calendar of more successful backups.
-- Trace Route Diagnosis - Working hand in hand with the Network
Resumption feature, Trace Route Diagnosis detects the exact location of
communication errors on the networking path. This reduces the time to
diagnose the location of the communication break or needing to start
        the entire process over.
-- Open Transaction Manager (OTM) or Open File Manager (OFM) - System
administrators can now chose between two options for integrated locked
file support to handle open files and databases, both directly embedded
in VytalVault 3.1. Locked file support is provided via two optional
third-party components, OTM(TM) from Columbia Data Products or OFM(TM)
from St. Bernard. When purchased as part of the eVault solution, both
are supported directly by eVault, no need for separate support calls.
-- Scheduling Service - Scheduling Service makes backups easier for both
administrators and end users. As part of the user interface,
Scheduling Service automatically runs backups at selected times.
Backups can run in the background without needing to be prompted
        manually.
