Exabyte and NetStorM SAN Alliance Partners Announce Native Fibre Channel Drive and Library Interoperability

NetStorM SAN Alliance Reaches Milestone in Qualification of Native Fibre

Channel Solutions

Apr 02, 2001, 01:00 ET from Exabyte Corporation

BOULDER, Colo., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Exabyte Corporation
(Nasdaq: EXBT), a performance leader in network storage, today announced that
its M2(TM) (Mammoth-2) native Fibre Channel drives and libraries have achieved
successful qualification with the following major Fibre Channel SAN component
vendors. Interoperability was reached mutually among Exabyte and the
NetStorM(TM) SAN Alliance partners, including Adaptec (Nasdaq: ADPT), ATTO,
Cambex (OTC Bulletin Board: CBEX), Emulex (Nasdaq: EMLX),
QLogic (Nasdaq: QLGC) and Vixel (Nasdaq: VIXL).
The NetStorM SAN Alliance makes it possible for anyone with a SAN to use
Exabyte Fibre Channel products with the hardware and software components of
their choice. Exabyte's current SAN offerings already lead the industry with
automation products that store up to 30 TB of data and use native Fibre
Channel tape drives, thus reducing the cost of the total solution. The native
Fibre Channel drives are capable of transferring 150 GB at 30 MB/sec and
provide rack densities three to five times that of competing offerings.
Native Fibre Channel enables users to more easily and cost-effectively
move the backup function from the LAN to a SAN, a network devoted exclusively
to backup. In addition, direct-connect libraries circumvent the need to
purchase and implement a router, an expensive hardware component, lowering the
 total cost of ownership.
"Exabyte's native Fibre Channel libraries have the best price, performance
and storage per square foot in the industry," said Jim Campbell, Exabyte's SAN
alliance manager. "Working with our NetStorM SAN Alliance partners, Exabyte
is providing the only Fibre Channel serverless backup in the world."
The objectives of the NetStorM SAN Alliance are achieved through a
rigorous joint testing and certification process to ensure that all partner
products, from hardware to software, work together in a managed storage
network environment. Achieving successful qualification of interoperability
today with major SAN component providers assures a solid foundation for the
 SAN architectures of the future.
"As Enterprise storage requirements continue to surge, so will the demand
for interoperable standards-based heterogeneous SAN solutions," said Don
Bauch, Director of Marketing at ATTO Technology, Inc. "To that end, we are
pleased to partner with Exabyte and mutually drive best-of-breed interoperable
SAN solutions designed to improve data management and reduce total cost of
 ownership."
"Our efforts to certify interoperability with Exabyte's native fibre
drives and libraries is further proof that QLogic is committed to delivering
top-of-the-line products, service and performance in the SAN environment,"
said Joe Kimpler, director of strategic relations for QLogic Corporation. "We
are pleased to partner with Exabyte to deliver fully tested and interoperable
 SAN solutions."
"As the world's leading supplier of Fibre Channel host bus adapters,
Emulex fully recognizes the need for open, heterogeneous and reliable SAN
solutions, and is pleased to work with Exabyte to certify its Fibre Channel
products," said Joe Teolis, senior director of product marketing, Emulex
Corporation. "Our rigorous interoperability testing with Exabyte not only
improves the SAN's reliability but also ensures a robust and high performance
 solution."
"Cambex's partnership with Exabyte provides our joint customers with high
availability SAN solutions that deliver the greatest reliability, scalability
and interoperability," said Peter Kruy, executive vice president of Cambex.
"Our participation in the NetStorM SAN Alliance means that customers can
confidently deploy tested and fully interoperable, best-in-class storage
networking solutions comprised of our leading FibreQuik host bus adapters and
hubs and Exabyte's high performance native Fibre Channel tape drives and
 libraries."
"Certifying SAN solutions with leading edge Fibre Channel companies is
core to Vixel's business," said Brad Stark, solutions marketing manager, Vixel
Corporation. "Providing heterogeneous solutions that leverage value the way
Mammoth-2 does, adds strength to Fibre Channel SAN offerings. Vixel is
pleased to join Exabyte's NetStorm SAN Alliance and demonstrate the value of
our 7000 series switches in great SAN solutions."
The NetStorM SAN Alliance couples Exabyte's automated tape drives and
 libraries -- Exabyte's M2(TM) (Mammoth-2) tape drive, X80 and X200 tape
libraries with built-in Fibre Channel connectivity -- with support from the
industry's leading SAN component and software providers. As part of the
Alliance, Exabyte and its partners have established points of contact for
support and engineering between organizations to ensure cooperative resolution
 of maintenance and development issues.
