Fiber-Powered Daniel Island Gives High-Tech Edge to Family Circle Cup Tennis Tournament

Apr 16, 2001, 01:00 ET from Optical Solutions Inc.

    DANIEL ISLAND, S.C., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Fast-action tennis won't be
the only thing lighting up the scene this week at the 28th annual Family
Circle Cup, newly located at Daniel Island in Charleston, S.C. The Island,
developed after a history of private ownership, has installed a
fiber-to-the-community system from Optical Solutions Inc. that's light years
ahead of the rest of the nation.
Daniel Island homes, businesses and municipal buildings -- including the
new Tennis Centre at Daniel Island -- will get unlimited bandwidth for voice,
video and high-speed data through their local service provider, the Daniel
Island Media Company. Tournament goers will see the impact first-hand at the
Centre's Cyber Cafe, where Internet access is free and fast.
The high-tech infrastructure stands in unique contrast to Daniel Island's
tranquil setting of green meadows, bird-filled marshes and old-fashioned
Southern charm and hospitality. For Bob Pinckney, president of Daniel Island
Media Company, fiber optics was the only solution that made sense. "Daniel
Island marries the best of the past with the best of the present and future,"
said Pinckney. "We've created a place where you can sit on your front porch
and enjoy a tall glass of lemonade with your neighbor one minute, and in the
next, jump online and participate in a video conference with your business
 colleague in Taiwan."
Pinckney chose Optical Solutions Inc.'s FiberPath(TM) solution for the
Daniel Island deployment. "I did a lot of investigation and quickly learned
that Optical Solutions is the only real player in fiber-to-the-community,"
Pinckney said. "No one else has a proven system that delivers quality voice,
video and data services over an all-optical network directly to the
 subscriber's premise."
Optical Solutions, based in Minneapolis, Minn., currently has deployments
of the FiberPath system throughout North America. FiberPath is a complete
equipment, networking and systems integration solution that is marketed to
communications service providers, utilities, municipalities and home
developers. End-users receive multi-line telephone service, up to 80 channels
of analog CATV, digital CATV and high-speed Internet access up to 10 Mbps.
Installation of the FiberPath system is a work-in-progress on Daniel
Island. The Tennis Centre at Daniel Island and its adjacent facilities -- the
Cyber Cafe, the Press Tent, the Club House, and the Hospitality Tent -- are
all currently powered by FiberPath. By the end of the year, 600 homes and
more than 35 businesses on the island also will be turned up for service.
Eventually, as development continues, the island will be home to 5,000 homes
and 2 million square feet of business/retail space.
