SPARKS, Md., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2001 Boston Marathon marks the
one year anniversary of the Discovery USA program. Fila Discovery USA is a
distance developmental training program based on their successful Discovery
Kenya program, which has produced 23 marathon victories in 1999 and 22 in 2000
along with numerous half-marathon and cross-country wins. As Discovery Kenya
team member Elijah Lagat crossed the finish line of the 2000 Boston Marathon,
followed by Moses Tanui, it signified a step towards the cross-cultural team
training based on Dr. Rosa's distance training principles. Fila (NYSE: FLH)
made the commitment to take great strides to help to improve the state of
distance running in the United States. In a few short months, Dr. Rosa and
Fila, tested potential candidates for Discovery USA at the US Olympic Trials
in Sacramento and opened the Fila Discovery USA training camp in Mt. Laguna
 four weeks later.
"I am very proud of the accomplishments of the Discovery USA team in this
short period of time," said Dr. Rosa, coach of Fila's Discovery programs.
"They have responded well to the group training practices and I look forward
to their long-term development and group training and racing with their Kenyan
 counterparts."
In late January, Discovery USA athletes trained in Kenya for four weeks
with their Kenyan counterparts. Josh Cox, Janelle Olson, Christine Clifton and
Eric Polonski lived and trained with Moses Tanui, Joseph Chebet, Elijah Lagat,
Paul Tergat and other Discovery Kenya athletes in Eldoret. The cross-cultural
exchange and team building is one of the foundations of Fila's Discovery
programs. The athletes share training techniques and a similar group living
environment while training for the Boston Marathon.
"In Kenya, we ran with 30 - 40 Discovery runners and day after day we all
pushed each other to improve," said Josh Cox of Fila's Discovery USA.
"Training with sub-2:10 athletes in Kenya gave me the confidence that I can
 get there as well."
"My experience in the Discovery program showed me the importance of the
group training and living environment," said Christine Clifton of Discovery
USA. "This environment fosters better running, I am able to just devote my
time to training and not worry about holding down a job at the same time."
The 2001 Boston Marathon is the first time that the Discovery USA & Kenya
athletes will compete as a unified cross-cultural team. After doing the same
workouts in Kenya and training as a team, Discovery USA will come full circle.
Discovery USA newcomers Jill Gaitenby and Sandy Jacobson look to Boston as
their first test only after a few months of training under Dr. Rosa's
guidance. The Boston Marathon will be the first of many international
platforms where the Fila Discovery athletes will be able to work together to
push their athletic ability to higher levels.
Fila will continue to recruit talented young athletes for inclusion in
future Discovery USA training sites. In addition, Fila will pursue
opportunities to ensure the Discovery USA athletes a training experience that
is on par with Fila's successful Discovery Kenya program. Key partners such as
Runner's World, Just for Feet and Road Runner Sports are also very committed
 to the Discovery program.
Athletes interested in Fila's Discovery USA program will be able to
register for possible inclusion in future Discovery USA testing by logging
onto fila.com. The website also provides information on Fila's Discovery
programs and future plans include athlete feature interviews and running chat
 sessions with Discovery USA athletes.
Fila is an authentic sports brand, committed to creating and marketing
products that enhance an individual's pursuit of sport as a way to experience
greater personal fulfillment. Fila has created strong brand recognition by
designing athletic and casual footwear along with activewear, casualwear and
sportswear with an innovative blend of performance and style, and by securing
professional athletic endorsements, event sponsorships and licensing
 partnerships.
