FirstEnergy Receives National Recognition for Tree-Care Practices for Third Consecutive Year

Apr 12, 2001, 01:00 ET from FirstEnergy Corp.

April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Arbor Day Foundation, one of the
world's leading proponents of tree planting and tree care, named FirstEnergy
Corp. (NYSE: FE) a Tree Line USA utility for the third consecutive year. As
in past years, FirstEnergy was the only investor-owned utility in Ohio to be
 honored this year.
"We are very pleased to be honored three years in a row by the National
Arbor Day Foundation," said Earl Carey, vice president of Distribution and
Customer Service. "Proper care for the trees in our service area is not only
good for the community, it makes good business sense because it reduces
 outages and increases service reliability."
The Tree Line USA award is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation,
in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters. The award
recognizes utility companies -- electric, gas, water or telephone -- that meet
three requirements: a program of quality tree care; annual worker training in
proper tree-care practices; and a tree planting and public education program.
The award was created to honor utility companies that promote dependable
service and abundant, healthy trees along America's streets and highways.
Only 67 utility companies in the United States were recognized as Tree Line
 USA utilities.
FirstEnergy was named a Tree Line USA utility as a result of the tree care
programs established and maintained by its four electric utility operating
companies -- Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company, Toledo Edison and
 Pennsylvania Power.
FirstEnergy is a diversified energy services holding company headquartered
in Akron, Ohio. Its four electric utility operating companies comprise the
nation's tenth largest electric system, serving 2.2 million customers within
13,200 square miles of northern and central Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
