FlipDog.com Releases April Job Opportunity Index; Layoffs Force Individuals to Move On, but Job Market Remains Strong

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from FlipDog.com

PROVO, Utah, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. job market is holding up,
according to FlipDog.com's April Job Opportunity Index (JOI), even though the
economy continues to shift on what seems to be a daily basis. Continuing a
pattern that began with the March report, seven out of 10 states demonstrated
significant movement this month, either increasing or decreasing by more than
one point in the monthly index.
"The job market is in a state of flux," said Brett Walker, vice president
of marketing at FlipDog.com. "People who are out of work will likely be able
to find a job fairly quickly. It may take a little longer than it did last
year, and they may need to relocate or even change fields, but jobs are still
 there."
Some states' opportunity climates are indeed improving for job seekers,
despite the national downward economic trend. Other states, however, are
swinging more quickly to the other end of the spectrum -- where employers have
the advantage in hiring situations. Following are the states posting the most
significant changes over the last six months:

State 6-Month Gain State 6-Month Loss
Rhode Island 10.58 New Mexico -11.01
      Oregon 4.87 North Carolina -5.96
      Maryland 4.15 Washington -5.20
      Maine 3.52 Arizona -3.69
      North Dakota 3.45 Utah -2.92

While the top 10 states in the JOI have remained the same since October,
many of them shifted positions this month. Following is the current top-10
 ranking in the JOI:

      1. Massachusetts no change
      2. California up from #4
      3. Colorado up from #8
      4. New Hampshire down from #2
      5. Virginia no change
      6. Connecticut no change
      7. Minnesota down from #3
      8. Vermont down from #7
      9. Maryland no change
      10. Washington no change
