    WINCHESTER, Va., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- F&M National Corporation
 (NYSE:   FMN) and BB&T Corporation (NYSE:   BB&T) have named T. Earl Rogers as
 president of BB&T's new community bank region, which will be created under the
 proposed merger structure and headquartered in Northern Virginia.
     BB&T operates community bank regions so that, as the corporation grows and
 expands, it will remain customer focused. Considerable authority is granted to
 regional presidents and their employees, which allows for local decision
 making.
     F&M National and BB&T Corporation announced on Jan. 24, 2001, that they
 had entered into a merger agreement providing for the exchange of F&M common
 stock for BB&T common stock.
     T. Earl Rogers, who joined F&M in 1996 at the acquisition of the former
 Fairfax Bank & Trust Company, has been in the financial services industry for
 nearly 40 years. He was an organizing officer and served as executive vice
 president of Fairfax Bank & Trust Company from 1984 until 1997. He became
 president of F&M Bank-Northern Virginia in 1997. F&M Bank-Northern Virginia
 had assets of $941.7 million at March 31, 2001.
     Rogers has lived in Northern Virginia for over 50 years. He is married and
 is the father of two adult children.

     The merger, which is subject to the approval of F&M shareholders and
