FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Question: What is the
fastest growing airport in the U.S. (according the U.S. Department of
Transportation) and the 9th fastest growing airport in the world, doing to
 make life easier for passengers?
Answer: The Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport unveils a
major piece of an ambitious $1.4 billion plus expansion and redevelopment
program on April 29 with the opening of the new, state-of-the-art Terminal
One. This is the first new terminal to be added to the airport since 1986.
The size of eight football fields, the $114 million, bright and airy,
steel and glass terminal emphasizes passenger convenience and comfort. The
first of several planned new concourses will be home to Continental,
Continental Connection, Northwest Airlines, America West and JetBlue gates. A
large passenger lounge area is dominated by a white wave wall inspired by the
Greater Fort Lauderdale beachfront. Restaurants such as Spinaci's, Jake's
Coffee House, and Chili's, as well as gift shops and news stands are clustered
around an open market area. A moving sidewalk carries travelers from a new
parking garage to the gates above vehicle traffic. Other recently completed
projects in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport's redevelopment
program include the renovation of Terminal Four, improvements to the other two
terminals and a new parking garage.
"The opening of a new terminal at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International
Airport is tremendously exciting for the airport itself and its 16 million
customers, and a dramatic reflection on the growth of Greater Fort Lauderdale
as a major international tourism destination," said Nicki E. Grossman,
president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.
"Perhaps the most telling statistic in the airport's phenomenal growth is that
so much of it is during what used to be the off-season proving that Greater
Fort Lauderdale has moved from being a single season vacation choice to a
year-round destination for vacationers, conferences and conventions and
 corporate business."
