PITTSBURGH, Dec. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Gateway Health was honored to make a donation of food and clothing to the Northside Salvation Army Worship & Service Center that was the result of a month long food and clothing drive at its Downtown Pittsburgh headquarters. Collecting a nearly 2,000 helpful and necessary items, which included shoes, clothing, jackets, bedding, food and other basic items, Gateway staff delivered the contribution to the Northside site of the Salvation Army on December 12.
"We are grateful and humbled by the generous donation of clothes and food as well as time and talents by Gateway Health," said Kenneth Cleveland, Lieutenant Pastor and Commanding Officer of the Northside Salvation Army. "My wife, Minnie and I know that throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season, the families we serve rely heavily on the donations we receive through the Salvation Army and companies like Gateway make it easier to meet those needs and hopefully give these families an opportunity to enjoy the holidays."
"As a Pennsylvania based business with a large number of members living in Western Pennsylvania, Gateway has an obligation to help those in need," said Patti Darnley, President and CEO of Gateway Health. "The generosity of our employees is something that makes Gateway truly special and I am so proud that we were able to hold such as successful donation drive. It will hopefully make a difference in the lives of those with whom we share our community and who may be experiencing some challenges or difficulties this holiday season. "
The Salvation Army relies on donations from individuals and businesses in their local surrounding communities. The holiday season is often synonymous with their Red Kettle drive, which can enable them to assist more than four-and-a-half million people between the Thanksgiving and Christmas time periods. Gateway organized their donation drive in recognition that many individuals in their own community may need help having their general needs met in order to have a healthy and happy holiday season.
"As a non-profit health plan that serves many vulnerable individuals, we recognize that many of our own Gateway members may be experiencing these same financial challenges," said Darnley, "It is this basic fact that makes us accountable to take any and all steps to positively impact their physical, spiritual and emotional well-being, not just during the holidays, but all year long."
