Apr 10, 2001, 01:00 ET from Gatorade

INDIANAPOLIS, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Honoring the nation's elite high
school athletes for more than fifteen years, Gatorade(R) Thirst Quencher, in
partnership with Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director magazine, today
announced Indianapolis' Shyra Ely of Ben Davis High School as the 2001
Gatorade National High School Girl's Basketball Player of the Year. The award,
which also factors in academic achievements and overall character,
distinguishes Shyra as the nation's best high school girls' basketball player.
The two-time Gatorade Indiana State Basketball Player of the Year leaves
behind a record setting high school career. A four-year starter for Ben
Davis, Shyra is the leading scorer (2,004) and rebounder (1,218) in the
school's history. She is one of sixteen girls in Indiana ever to score more
than 2,000 points. This season, Shyra led her team to their second
consecutive 4A State Championship while averaging 16.8 points, 10.4 rebounds
and 2.2 steals per game. Additionally, Shyra was honored as the Naismith
award winner, Parade All-American, Nike All-American, Street and Smith All-
American and named Super Team Player of the Year and "Indiana Miss
Basketball." Shyra looks to continue her success as she joins the legendary
University of Tennessee Lady Vols next year.
Coach Stan Benge believes a strong determination to win has helped bring
her so much success. "Shyra is one of the best players I have had the
opportunity to coach. She has an incredible drive to succeed and is the type
of player who puts team goals over her own. As great as she is on the court,
Shyra is a better person with a good heart. It's nice to see her recognized
for being such an outstanding individual."
As if her unbelievable on-the-court achievements were not enough, Shyra is
equally successful in the classroom. She maintains a 3.65 GPA and is involved
in a variety of activities at her school. Shyra is a member of the National
Honor Society, Student Council and Key Club. She also plays volleyball and
runs track, where she holds the school record for the 4X100 meter relay.
The 2001 Gatorade National High School Girls' Basketball Player of the
Year selection was made by the Gatorade National Advisory Board, comprised of
10 national and regional sports journalists who collected nominations from
across the country. Shyra was selected from more than 452,000 high school
 girls' basketball players nationwide.
"We believe that true success in high school athletics is predicated on
more than just skill," said Gatorade Vice President of Sports Marketing, Tom
Fox. "While Gatorade athletes are the best in their sports, being a winner
also means having character, being a leader and caring as much about your test
scores as your games scores. Shyra Ely is a shining example of the positive
role that sports can play in a teenager's life."
Shyra joins an elite list of past Gatorade National Girls' Basketball
 Players of the Year.
