Global Services and Media Company Aimed at Gay and Lesbian Market to Operate

As PlanetOut Partners, Inc.

Apr 17, 2001, 01:00 ET from PlanetOut Partners, Inc.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- PlanetOut Corp. and Gay.com parent
company OnlinePartners.com, Inc. today announced that they have finalized
their merger and will now be operating as PlanetOut Partners, Inc. The merger
of the two largest online businesses serving the gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender (GLBT) market creates a global Internet services and media company
reaching more than 4.3 million online visitors each month.
PlanetOut Partners will maintain the popular Gay.com and PlanetOut.com
consumer Internet portals, each one with more than 1.1 million registered
users in addition to the Gay.com regional portals. The company will also
continue its well-known travel newsletter and Web site Out & About
(www.outandabout.com), as well as its successful online shopping platform
 Kleptomaniac.com.
"The integration of PlanetOut Corporation and Online Partners was
successfully completed and we are well-positioned to reach our profitability
goals this year both domestically and internationally," said PlanetOut
Partners chief executive officer Lowell Selvin. "PlanetOut Partners is
already achieving great milestones from its diversified revenue streams,
including its international businesses, e-commerce, premium services such as
 personals, and advertising and sponsorships."
Gay.com has constructed the largest global online network and distribution
channel serving the GLBT market, with local teams running businesses and
overseeing investments in Europe, Latin America and North America and
delivering eight regional portals in five languages. Gay.com users stay
online and return more often than those of other leading sites.
PlanetOut.com, for its part, attracts users with the largest online personals
service for GLBT people, as well as with original content channels such as its
comprehensive gay and lesbian film database, community news, entertainment,
and in-depth travel information. PlanetOut.com has pioneered portal
integration relationships with the top online players, including America
Online, Yahoo, Microsoft's MSN, and others. In addition to its Internet
sites, PlanetOut Partners has also begun to branch offline with offerings such
as the Out & About travel newsletter and the PlanetOut NextCard Visa cards.
As a result of integration efforts, the two heritage companies were able
to attract new, high-profile advertisers in the first three months of 2001.
These include such leading companies as Cingular Wireless, Miller Brewing
Company, Chase, Showtime, CBS, and Johnson & Johnson. The company also
secured significant travel sponsorships from US Airways on PlanetOut.com and a
renewed partnership with American Airlines on the Gay.com portal. "While the
advertising market as a whole has slowed over the past several months, leading
companies realize that the way to maximize their return on investment is to
focus advertising dollars in lucrative target markets," said PlanetOut
Partners executive vice president and chief revenue officer Mark Elderkin.
"Our advertising sales remain strong because Fortune 500 companies are finding
that gay customers are among their best customers and that the Web is the only
way to reach this group en masse."
Gay.com and PlanetOut.com generate most of their traffic through
interactive community services such as chat and personals. In February,
PlanetOut.com began monetizing premium services with the launch of an upgraded
personals service, PlanetOut PersonalsPlus. The premium personals service has
become a significant revenue source for PlanetOut Partners and the company is
developing other premium services on both of its online brands to address the
unique needs of gay and lesbian customers. "Now that we've created the
largest GLBT community on the Web, we see tremendous revenue potential in
expanding our offerings to include tailored products that make it easier for
our customers to connect with each other and to get the information and
services they want," said PlanetOut Partners president Megan Smith.
"PersonalsPlus is a great example of a very successful premium service that
addresses the needs of this community."
The e-commerce platform Kleptomaniac.com has exceeded projected revenue
each month since its acquisition by Online Partners in December 2000. The
shopping platform now leverages the reach of the company's two large portals
by offering Gay.com and PlanetOut.com customers unique clothing and gift items
from the "gay capitals" of the world. Kleptomaniac.com works as a direct
distribution vehicle for manufacturers and merchants who are targeting gay
customers allowing local businesses to sell on a national scale.
