    HAMPTON, N.H., April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --The
 General Chemical Group Inc. (NYSE:   GCG) today  announced that it has idled the
 production of soda ash at its Amherstburg, Ontario, facility as planned. The
 company may return its synthetic soda-ash operations to full capacity if
 future market conditions dictate. As previously announced, the company will
 continue to produce soda ash at its facility in Green River, Wyo., and calcium
 chloride in Amherstburg, supplemented by production at General Chemical's
 Manistee, Mich., calcium-chloride facility. These operational changes and cost
 improvement actions will generate estimated annualized savings of $7 million
 by 2002.
