Apr 03, 2001, 01:00 ET from Georgia Power

ATLANTA, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgia Power today introduced Premium
Surge Protection -- a new product that protects telephones, computers,
televisions, major appliances and other electronics from damaging lightning-
 related surges.
"This new product will help protect the customer's investment in their
home electronics and appliances," said Carl Jackson, product marketing
manager. "With Premium Surge Protection, there is no need to unplug
appliances during lightning-related surge charges into your home."
The spring sales campaign rolls out today in metro Atlanta, with radio
advertisements, direct mail, bill inserts and outdoor billboards being used to
communicate the promotional campaign: "Keep Your Stuff from Getting Fried! Buy
Premium Surge Protection." Georgia Power will also use special events and
sponsorship opportunities to promote Premium Surge Protection.
Premium Surge Protection is designed to guard homes at the three most
common entry points most vulnerable to potential damaging surges -- cable,
 phone and electrical lines.
The new product is being offered in a 21-county area to Georgia Power
residential customers who are single-family homeowners. A fee of $9.99 per
month will be added to customers' electric bill. There is no installation fee
if customers respond before June 29.
Premium Surge Protection offers a manufacturer's warranty of $5,000 per
equipment item, up to $50,000 replacement per incident. Equipment is either
repaired or replaced if the protection system is breached by surges.
To order Premium Surge Protection, customers may call 1-877-451-0056, or

Georgia Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO),
one of the nation's largest generators of electricity. The company is an
investor-owned, tax-paying utility, serving customers in 57,000 of the state's
59,000 square miles. Georgia Power's rates are 15 percent below the national
