The Smallest Interactive Two-Way Word-Messaging Systems

Apr 10, 2001, 01:00 ET from Glenayre Technologies, Inc.

    CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 10 /PRNewswire/ --
Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS), a leader in unified
communications solutions, today announced that the AccessLink(TM) II two-way
wireless messaging device has been awarded finalist status by Network
Computing, a CMP Media LLC magazine, for a 2001 Well Connected Award in the
category of mobile handheld wireless devices. The AccessLink II device is one
of the smallest, lightest, and most cost-effective two-way communications
devices on the market today. Operating on a ReFLEX-based network, the
AccessLink II device provides the benefits of broad nationwide coverage,
superior in-building penetration, excellent battery life, and real
 applications for today's mobile worker.
"This nomination reinforces the need for devices like the AccessLink II
that serve as an extension of the personal computer allowing users to stay
connected through wireless e-mail, instant messaging, and vital information,"
states Eric Doggett, President and Chief Executive Officer for Glenayre. "It
also substantiates the performance of ReFLEX-based networks, which provide
broader nationwide coverage and superior in-building penetration to cellular
 networks."
Weighing only 4.2 ounces, but boasting substantial memory, AccessLink II
device stores up to 150 thousand characters of messages with 30 day battery
life, superior to many of the competing products. The AccessLink II device
provides users with the latest technology to communicate with both office and
home systems as well as link with Palm OS-based and Microsoft's Windows
CE(TM)-based devices, and access other types of data, including stock quotes,
ski reports, package tracking, and directories.
The AccessLink II device also provides connectivity to other infrared
enabled devices. Using an industry standard IrDA communications port, other
devices, like handheld organizers and Personal Computers, can quickly and
easily communicate with the unit. Messages can be "beamed" to the AccessLink
II device via the IrDA for transmission via the ReFlex two-way network.
Additionally, messages can be retrieved from the unit utilizing the IrDA, and
addresses can be uploaded and downloaded via Link Companion Software available
off the www.Glenayre.com website. The AccessLink II device is available
through SkyTel or Metrocall wireless carriers.
ReFLEX-based networks are wireless data networks that provide two-way
interactive messaging between wireless devices and the Internet. In addition,
ReFLEX-based devices have long battery life, ensuring that subscribers will
receive their messages at any time, in almost any location.
This year, the winners of the Network Computing Well-Connected Awards will
be revealed at a gala event held on the evening before one of the industry's
largest trade shows, Networld+Interop 2001 Las Vegas. All Finalists will be
highlighted in the May 14th issue of Network Computing and also on Network
 Computing Online at http://www.networkcomputing.com.
"No other annual awards program in the industry uses hands-on evaluations
to choose its winners," said Fritz Nelson, Publisher of CMP's Network
Computing. "Our editors worked at length to research and test the best
offerings in the enterprise arena. Being named a Well-Connected Award
Finalist is a true reflection of product quality rather than merely product
 popularity or marketing effectiveness."
