    CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 18 /PRNewswire/ --
Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS), a leader in unified
communications solutions, today announced an alliance with Shanghai Metro, one
of China's largest subway systems supporting a significant commercial and
financial community with an estimated 4 million mobile subscribers.
Glenayre's Metro Cellular Distribution System, which supports underground
cellular communications services to mobile professionals, is scheduled to be
installed and serviced by October 1, 2001, China's National Day.
Based on Glenayre's technology, Shanghai Metro communications operators
will be able to provide mobile cellular service to subscribers anywhere in the
Line 1 and Line 2 of Shanghai Metro, including coverage in 23 underground
subway tunnels and stations. To Shanghai mobile subscribers, this service
will provide seamless coverage as subscribers travel from above ground to
underground, through concrete tunnels and Metro stations. Few subway systems
offer mobile subscribers a service of such quality.
"Glenayre's partnership with Shanghai Metro is an integral component that
enables Glenayre to provide complete communications solutions to our
customers," comments Bill Edwards, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales
for Glenayre. "We are committed to China's wireless marketplace and providing
seamless communications for the mobile professional."
Glenayre's Metro Cellular Distribution System is pre-designed with the
capacity to expand subscriber support for China Mobile's and China Unicom's
 communications services in Shanghai.
This is the second cooperative effort between Glenayre and Shanghai Metro.
On December 28, 1999, Glenayre partnered with Shanghai Metro to provide a
Multi-channel Paging Distribution System that allowed Shanghai paging
operators to provide service to the paging subscribers in the Metro. The
system was successfully put in service on October 1, 2000.
Madam Ye, General Manager of Shanghai Metro Telecommunication &
Transmission Co., Ltd. remarked, "After a long-term cooperation with Glenayre,
we not only trust Glenayre's Metro RF Distribution System and good post-sale
service, but also appreciate Glenayre's commitment to support seamless
underground communications coverage. This is why we selected Glenayre to
support Shanghai Metro's Cellular Distribution System. We have full
confidence Glenayre will make this a successful project."
