The shift in the photons provides information about vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency transitions in the molecules of the sample. The resulting pattern obtained gives a unique fingerprint or pattern that allows the user to match it with existing patterns and identify the composition of the sample.

The popularity of hyphenated, or hybrid, Raman instruments will continue to rise. The outsourcing of drug discovery processes to subcontract laboratories to cut costs is another trend that will gain popularity between 2015 and 2020.
