HARRISBURG, Pa., March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett announced today that Site Selection magazine, a publication specializing in the corporate real estate and economic development field, has ranked Pennsylvania as the top state in the northeast region for new corporate facilities in 2012.
For the second year in a row, Pennsylvania ranked third nationwide for new or expanded corporate facilities in 2012.
"This recognition from Site Selection is verification that our efforts to improve the business climate and encourage job growth is paying off," said Corbett. "This award is much more than a ranking, new or expanded facilities mean economic investment in our state and new jobs for our citizens."
Site Selection reported that Pennsylvania finished third in the nation with 430 new or expanded corporate facilities in 2012. The ranking is based on new corporate location projects that met at least one of the following criteria: involved a capital investment of at least $1 million, created at least 50 new jobs or added at least 20,000 square feet of space.
Pennsylvania was rated the top state in the northeast region by the Governor's Cup New Plant Scoreboard, which divides the country into seven regions.
Pennsylvania also received recognition for successful projects in metropolitan and micropolitan areas throughout the state. Pittsburgh ranked sixth in tier one areas with a total of 126 projects and the Greater Philadelphia region was seventh with 124 projects.
Two Pennsylvania tier two metropolitan areas broke the top 10 including Lancaster with 33 projects and the Lehigh Valley with 24 projects. New Castle and Sayre boroughs finished in the top 10 in micropolitan areas having eight projects respectively.
"It is encouraging that the successful projects were not restricted to one or two regions – we are seeing growth and job creation throughout the state – from our major metropolitan centers to our rural communities," Corbett said. "Continuing our efforts to improve our business climate and simplify the relationship between employers and state government will help us carry this momentum forward."
Site Selection, the official publication of the Industrial Asset Management Council, is published six times annually and distributed to over 44,000 executives responsible for site selection and facility planning decisions around the world. Site Selection's 2012 Governor's Cup has awarded top performing states for over 30 years. The rankings are considered a benchmark by corporate real estate analysts.
