Grand Canyon Village Marketplace Celebrates Earth Day with Local Students

    GRAND CANYON, Ariz., April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The most visible tool for
 environmental awareness -- Earth Day -- turns 31 years old on Sunday,
 April 22, and Grand Canyon National Park's Canyon Village Marketplace is doing
 its part to educate local children on the importance of preserving the natural
 environment.
     At Grand Canyon National Park, four projects are in place to commemorate
 Earth Day, each promoting recycling and conservation among the children in the
 Grand Canyon School District and customers at the Canyon Village Marketplace,
 operated by Delaware North Parks Services (DNPS), a park concessionaire that
 provides retail, food and beverage operations.
     The Earth Day Grocery Bag Project is a nationwide effort that teams
 students and grocers to spread the message of Earth Day.  Students in grades
 K-6 at Grand Canyon Elementary decorated brown paper bags with environmental
 messages about reduce, reuse, and recycle, as part of a contest at the school.
 The bags will be returned to Canyon Village Marketplace, and on Earth Day,
 customers will receive their purchases in the decorated bags.  The contest
 generated 153 entries and winners will be announced at the school and the
 store.
     DNPS, in its commitment to preserve the natural beauty and resources of
 national and state parks, will be distributing commemorative canvas bags to
 local residents on Earth Day, promoting the conservation of paper and the
 non-use of plastics.
     Students at Grand Canyon Junior/Senior High School were asked to design an
 Earth Day T-shirt.  The shirts were to incorporate the words "Grand Canyon,"
 "Earth Day," and "2001."  Over 60 entries were received and all designs are
 posted at Canyon Village Marketplace.  The winning concept, designed by
 sophomore Michelle Harvey, was printed and T-shirts were given to all
 students, as well as DNPS employees to wear on Earth Day.  The winning slogan
 was ... "just take care of it, and you will see the inner side."
     The National Park Service has teamed with the Grand Canyon School, Grand
 Canyon Association and DNPS to work on a revegetation project for the park's
 Mohave housing area.  Eighty 7th and 8th grade students will trench out
 200-300 feet of earth to be used for drainage.  The trenches then will be
 filled with rock and soil, and the students will place over 140 plants in the
 ground. A picnic will be held for the students, sponsored by DNPS.
