Grey Global Group's GCI Acquires Read-Poland Associates

Prominent Texas Firm Strengthens GCI's Domestic Reach

And Adds Key Industry Expertise, Senior Talent

Apr 16, 2001, 01:00 ET from GCI Group

NEW YORK, April 16 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- GCI Group, one
of the world's largest public relations firms, announced today that it has
 acquired Read-Poland Associates, a prominent Austin-based group with a
half-century of Texas heritage. The acquisition expands GCI's reach in the
United States, strengthens the firm's capabilities in the areas of Public
Affairs and Crisis Communications and adds several key senior executives to
 GCI's global management team.
Read-Poland Associates had fee revenue of more than $2.2 million in 2000,
and is the oldest independent public relations and public affairs operations
in the Texas market. It currently is celebrating its 50th anniversary as an
influential force on the state's business and political scene. Terms of the
transaction were not disclosed. The merged company will operate as GCI
 Read-Poland.
In addition to acquiring Read-Poland's offices in Austin, Dallas, Houston
and establishing a credible and comprehensive presence in the Texas market,
GCI will acquire some top industry talent that will impact its business
worldwide. Read-Poland's two top executives, Chairman Julian Read, and
President Jeff Hunt will play key roles in GCI's global operations. Read was
public relations advisor and confidant to Texas Governor and Treasury
Secretary John B. Connally, handled campaign work for President Lyndon B.
Johnson, and is one of the industry's most experienced and respected public
affairs consultants. Before being named president of Read-Poland earlier this
year, Hunt was COO of Burson-Marstellar Europe and is a top international
player with broad experience in North and South America, Asia and Europe.
"This is an acquisition that is great for us in many ways," said Bob
Feldman, President and CEO of GCI Group. "Culturally we are a real match,
which is a top priority for us. Plus, both organizations pride themselves on
fostering an entrepreneurial environment that is focused on providing superior
 client service."
Feldman noted that the presence of Texan George W. Bush in the White House
and the growing importance of Texas as now the nation's second most populous
state make the transaction especially timely and significant.
"Read-Poland brings GCI instant credibility in Texas, with offices in
three major PR markets," he said. "In addition, GCI gains two senior managers
in Julian and Jeff who will bring a deep knowledge of the state and the
industry to GCI and help us continue to grow in the future."
"The marriage of Read-Poland Associates and GCI fulfills the needs of two
organizations that have very similar values and visions," said Read. "GCI
will gain a powerful presence in the Texas market and Read-Poland gains access
to GCI's specialized global practice areas that will be key drivers for growth
in the Southwest PR market, along with access to GCI's wide network of offices
to better service its national clients. It also will enable Read-Poland to
perpetuate its history into the next half century and offer expanded
 opportunity to its associates."
Read-Poland Associates' client base includes the Pulse financial services
industry network, Bell Helicopter Textron, MGM Mirage, Miller Brewing and ATP
Tour. The firm was founded in 1951 and currently has 23 employees. Its broad
experience ranges from aerospace and banking to hospitality and entertainment.
It is especially noted for its public affairs and media expertise.
