    HARLEYSVILLE, Pa., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The shareholders of
 Harleysville Group Inc. (Nasdaq:   HGIC) and the policyholders of Harleysville
 Mutual Insurance Company, the owner of 57 percent of the shares of
 Harleysville Group, have re-elected three members to their respective boards
 of directors.
     Lowell R. Beck, Robert D. Buzzell and Joseph E. McMenamin have been
 re-elected to three-year terms on the Harleysville Group board, while Walter
 R. Bateman, Robert D. Buzzell and Frank E. Reed have been re-elected to three-
 year terms on the Harleysville Mutual board.
     Bateman is Harleysville's chairman, president and chief executive officer.
 He has been a director of both boards since 1992.
     Beck is the retired president and chief executive officer of the National
 Association of Independent Insurers, an insurance industry trade group in Des
 Plaines, Ill. For the past year, he has been an attorney with the law firm of
 Stone and Moore, Chicago, Ill. Beck has been a director of Harleysville Group
 since 1996.
     Buzzell, who was elected to the Harleysville Mutual board in 1991 and the
 Harleysville Group board in 1992, is Distinguished Visiting Professor of
 Marketing at Georgetown University.
     McMenamin is the retired president and chief operating officer of Keystone
 Insurance Companies, Philadelphia, Pa. He has been a director of both boards
 since 1999.
     Reed is director of Alltel Corporation, and retired president and chief
 operating officer of CoreStates Philadelphia National Bank. He has been a
 director of Harleysville Mutual since 1985 and a director of Harleysville
 Group since 1986.
