MENLO PARK, Calif., Feb. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Fidelity, a healthcare big data company and technology leader in clinical natural language processing (NLP), has received a grant from the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) to support research in big data analytics and data-driven healthcare.
NSF awarded Health Fidelity the grant to address automated cohort identification, using data from electronic health records (EHR) to meet quality of care requirements within meaningful use and accountable care organizations. Healthcare organizations today spend millions to scale manual processes to achieve basic quality measures and limited claims information. Automating the process will allow a far more affordable, robust, and effective approach.
Clinical content needed to properly assess the patient's risk and determine the best treatment available is within clinical narrative notes, but without the proper tools, the knowledge remains unavailable and unused. For clinicians and hospitals with massive amounts of unused electronic clinical information, which could improve the quality of care, the implications can be higher than expected mortality rates and rising medical costs.
"The trend toward big data will have a significant impact on improving treatment outcomes," said Dan Riskin, M.D., CEO and co-founder of Health Fidelity. "Over time, we will customize care of the individual based on millions of patient experiences, rather than trying to learn new lessons one patient at a time. We are honored that the NSF has acknowledged our commitment to innovative solutions that can meaningfully impact the national healthcare system."
NSF selected Health Fidelity for funding this and previous efforts based on the company's proven record of innovative approaches to data-driven healthcare, aimed at leveraging big data to address seemingly insurmountable quality challenges. Health Fidelity's previous successful development with NSF grants highlights the company's ability to tackle hard problems, fashion novel approaches, and execute toward effective solutions.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget is $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives over 50,000 competitive requests for funding, and makes about 11,000 new funding awards. NSF also awards nearly $420 million in professional and service contracts yearly.
