HealthAmerica and HealthAssurance Bring Employees and Local Students Together

HealthAmerica Employees Serving as Mentors for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Of

The Capital Region Program

Apr 27, 2001, 01:00 ET from HealthAmerica Pennsylvania, Inc.

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Employees of HealthAmerica and
HealthAssurance, an affiliate of Coventry Health Care, Inc., are looking out
for more than simply the physical health of the community. In a partnership
between HealthAmerica and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region,
employees will serve as mentors for area elementary school students.
Seven mentors will visit with students at school once a week to spend time
talking, playing games or having a meal. Students involved in school-based
mentoring programs develop more positive attitudes toward school, improve
grades and attendance, and interact better with peers, teachers and parents.
"We encourage and support the partnership with the Big Brothers Big
Sisters mentoring program," said Francis S. Soistman Jr., chief executive
office of HealthAmerica. "The extra time we take to encourage a student can
make a world of difference in that child's life. Through mentoring we improve
the present and future of our community."
The Big Brothers Big Sisters School-based Mentoring Program, the first of
its kind in the Harrisburg region, matches employees of local organizations
with at-risk youth in mainly urban schools.
