HGTV surprised 48-year-old Headrick, an elementary school art teacher and
avid HGTV fan, with the news of her win in her Garfield Elementary School
classroom while her students, staff and principal looked on. Headrick was led
to believe that a guest was visiting her classroom to read aloud to her
students. She was unaware that the "reader" was actually Claire Berger, host
of HGTV's "Fantasy Open House," who was there to present her as Grand Prize
Winner of the HGTV 2001 Dream Home Giveaway.
Headrick, who had entered HGTV's Dream Home Giveaway sweepstakes in
previous years and never won before, said, "I'm totally shocked! I'm still
floating about two inches off the ground. I would have been glad to win a
garage door -- I won the whole house! I'm just ecstatic."
"HGTV's fifth annual Dream Home Giveaway was another smashing success with
over 6.6 million entries. We are proud to congratulate Kathy Headrick as this
year's Grand Prize Winner," said Burton Jablin, President, HGTV. "We hope she
is pleased with her new coastal getaway."
Bob Niles, President of Time Warner Cable in Kansas City, said, "We're so
excited that one of our long-time customers has won the HGTV 2001 Dream Home
Giveaway! Many people tell us how much they love HGTV, but I'm guessing that
today, nobody loves them more than Kathy Headrick. Thanks, HGTV, and
 congratulations, Kathy."
