In Store Media Systems, Inc. Announces Commercial Introduction of Its Electronic Coupon Clearing System

Apr 23, 2001, 01:00 ET from In Store Media Systems, Inc.

AURORA, Colo., April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- In Store
Media Systems, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: ISMS) announced today that it has
begun commercial operation of its patent pending, Coupon Bank(TM) electronic
coupon clearing system. The Coupon Bank System ("CBS") has been installed in
four Bi-Lo, Inc. supermarkets in Greenville, SC. Bi-Lo, Inc. is a division of
Ahold USA, Inc., the third largest U.S. supermarket chain.
Bi-Lo was selected by ISMS to be the first supermarket retailer to receive
CBS units because Bi-Lo is often the first in Ahold USA -- Retail to install
 innovative technology.
The initial four-store installation is to demonstrate the value and
effectiveness of the ("CBS") in reducing costs and workload in Bi-Lo stores.
Following the system demonstration period, Bi-Lo will have the option to
install CBS systems in its other 284 stores.
The operating CBS units are being serviced by personnel provided by Acosta
Sales and Marketing, Inc. pursuant to a recently announced agreement between
Acosta and ISMS. Coupon count verification and other processing services are
being provided to ISMS by NCH NuWorld, Ltd. in accordance with an agreement
between NCH and ISMS announced February 26, 2001.
During the first three weeks of the demonstration period, the CBS
equipment has functioned very well with no system downtime. ISMS has also
used the demonstration period to refine its field operations, and its
electronic payment and data processing procedures.
The initial CBS units were produced by Kiosk Information Systems and
purchased for cash by ISMS. In Store Capital LLC has provided a financing
facility that allows ISMS to promptly reimburse Bi-Lo for coupons redeemed at
each of the four stores. In Store Capital will provide future equipment
financing for the production of CBS units that are to be installed after the
 demonstration period.
The patent pending CBS provides valuable services to the $6.8 billion
coupon industry. The CBS units improve on current coupon processing
procedures by reducing the processing cycle from six to eight weeks to just 24
hours. Retailers are freed from the cost and nuisance of coupon handling and
receive prompt reimbursement, which can return to chain operations tens of
millions of dollars that are now perpetually tied up in coupon receivables.
Currently manufacturers must wait months to receive only general coupon
promotion results. Now, with the CBS system, manufacturers will receive very
specific data within days, which matches the redeemed coupons to daily
purchases of the designated products in each store. This allows brand
managers to adjust coupon promotions that are ineffective or going over
 budget.
In addition, the CBS can sharply reduce coupon misredemption and fraud, a
persistent $500 million-a-year problem for manufacturers and retailers alike.
Don Uhl, President of ISMS said, "These installations are an important
first step for our Company as it makes the transition from product development
to commercial operations. Moreover, we are confident the CBS will be
successful because the retail food industry, as represented by its Joint
Industry Coupon Committee, has long recommended establishment of a
standardized accurate, timely, and cost effective coupon clearing process. We
believe the CBS meets these objectives very well and, because ISMS provides
its equipment and service at no additional cost to either supermarkets or
packaged goods manufacturers, the economic barrier to large-scale
 implementation is minimized."
