LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearing the end of its first season, Sky Ball League is gearing up for the final blowout to see which team wins the Tournament of Champions and takes home the $40,000 purse. Airing nationwide on a variety of cable networks (see listings below), four teams consisting of 8 women and 24 men from Florida, Texas, Ohio and California have battled it out over the last few weeks to make it to the final takedown in Los Angeles.
"Everyone's so pumped over the opportunity to be part of an exciting new sport," says Tampa Dragonz player Bryn Renda. "Especially without having to come up through the ranks of a gender-specific amateur league," she adds. "Although it's a very fast-moving, competitive game," says Jessica Hatch from the Austen Starz, "it's easy to get into the groove and anyone can try out for Sky Ball League ... you just need to 'bring it' every time you get out on the court."
Sky Ball, the game, is a combination of basketball, baseball and volleyball, with a little lacrosse thrown in. Using Sky Balls and smash gloves, it is played on a court with the goals set at each end and consisting of three scoring pads 12' - 17' high. Slightly larger than a softball and pumped with oxygen and helium, Sky Balls are capable of bouncing up to 75 feet.
"Besides the requisite physical dexterity, the challenge to players," says League co-creator Brian Kessler, "is that they must not only excel in controlling the ball, but the skillful manipulation of a challenging piece of equipment."
"Age knows no bounds," co-creator Danny Swartz adds. "Across the league, this season's players range between 18 and 43, and neither age nor gender nor size - heights vary from 5' to 6'7" - has made a bit of difference on how well anyone plays."
Kessler and Swartz, both long-time avid sports fans, see an opportunity to not only introduce a new pro sport, but one that fully embraces anyone who has ever aspired to be part of a real team in a real league ... no matter who they are.
