Jabber Open-Source Technology Cited as Strong Candidate for De Facto Standard In Instant Messaging and Presence Management Industries

Jabber Technology on Verge of Major Industry Acceptance

Jan 05, 2001, 00:00 ET from Jabber.com, Inc.

DENVER, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Jabber, the industry's only extensible,
open-source instant messaging (IM) and presence technology, is a strong
candidate to become a de facto industry standard over the next several years,
according to a new report from The Burton Group's (TBG) Network Strategy
Service ("New Developments in Instant Messaging -- December 28, 2000"). In
addition, the report states that Jabber technology currently is enjoying
 vigorous industry momentum and support.
In a recent interview, James Kobielus, TBG analyst and IM report author,
said the Jabber.org open-source initiative addresses the IM/presence
industry's critical need for open, non-proprietary standards. "One of the most
important advantages of Jabber.org open-source technology is that its ongoing
evolution is not under the thumb of any vendor," said Kobielus. "Jabber
technology, the basis for commercial offerings from Jabber.com and other
vendors, will be a major beneficiary of the failure of the Internet
Engineering Task Force's Instant Messaging and Presence Protocol Working Group
to define open 'de jure' standards."
Further demonstrating Jabber technology's strong momentum in the
marketplace, Jabber.com, one of the leading vendors of Jabber-based solutions,
announced today that open source server downloads have now surpassed
15,000, with more than 3,000 servers downloaded in the month of December 2000
alone. Because businesses, not consumers, are downloading and installing
Jabber servers, this measurement is considered a better indicator of market
adoption than measuring the number of end-users.
Andre Durand, founder of Jabber.com, Inc. said, "We're finding that demand
for our commercial Jabber products and services is directly related to the
success of the open source movement, and we are particularly encouraged by the
broad industry support for Jabber as a real-time communications platform among
the software development community, service providers and enterprise users.
Each new download of the freely available Jabber server from the open source
movement becomes a pre-qualified customer for Jabber.com and this recent
increase in Jabber adoption is expected to further accelerate the commercial
acceptance of our products and services within our target markets."
Jabber momentum has attracted some of the best technical and open source
luminaries, experts and analysts in the world:
